Jan, I’m so sorry.  I just couldn’t believe it.  I know we don’t see each other often but you are in my prayers and I’m just a block away.



A true teacher and pioneer. It was an honor to learn and be taught by him. Dr. Sponsel did leave a generation of lesions in each one of his students. Thank you!!! My condolences to his family and those close to him.

I  have known Dr. Sponsel for many years (I believe I met him when I was just a young kid of 8yrs).  He and my father where in the same residency program at TTHSC in the Permian Basin. I believe they also began taking ER shifts at Martin county around the same time. I was blessed with having him as one of my own attendings after my acceptance to the program nearly 20 years later !  His bedside manner was one of the best. He also encouraged doing your own procedures,  when they were needed. I learned so much from him! Even though his health declined over the years, his passion for medicine, teaching, and his patients remained steadfast. He will be truly missed in this world. My prayers and thoughts to his wife and family.

What a loss! We were teaching colleagues at Odessa College. His students loved him...great humor, fair, and impartial. When they transferred into my program after taking his class, it made my job easier.  He took a special interest in struggling students and mentored them. He helped make OC one of the top community colleges in the nation.

Dr. Sponsel was a great, compassionate, kindhearted, loving and exceptional mentor. I learned a lot from him when I was a resident at Texas Tech. His love for human kind and animals especially his donkeys was amazing. You will truly be missed and my condolences to his wife and family. Rest In Peace.

He did his residency at Medical Center, Odessa when I worked in the Women's Health Clinic.  He will be missed.

I worked with Dr. Sponsel at MCH.  There was not a kinder, more caring, and compassionate physician.  He treated staff, patients, and residents with the utmost consideration.  A true loss.  Prayers until you meet again. 


I’m so saddened by this news. Loved Dr. Sponsel both as a physician and colleague. Always kept his patients forefront in his mind & priorities. Prayers for family. 

Dr. Sponsel was my personal physician and colleague  for 25 years.  
I always tell patients a good physician takes care of you when you go to see them.  A great physican thinks about you when you aren't in their office.  Dr. Sponsel was without a doubt a great physician.  When I was in my 30's I asked him to put me on aricept because 9 of my maternal aunts had Alzheimers.  He laughed and said it was a bit early.  A few days later my phone rang and it was Dr. Sponsel.  He told me he'd checked into the Alzheimers thing and I needed to avoid antihistamine/decongestents and work puzzles to delay the onset of Alzheimers but there was no data to suggest starting aricept before symptoms.  He took exceptional care of me--I was one of his very last private patients when he retired.
He was an amazing human in addition to being a great doctor.  He was kind to everyone, had an inquisitve mind, a great sense of humor and loved his wife and animals.  The world is a little sadder without his presence.  



Dr Sponsel  was a visionary, great mentor, excellent physician and a compassionate loving friend. He had left countless wonderful memories that will never fade from my heart. My sincere condolences for Jan and his family. He will be missed dearly.  May his soul rest in peace 🙏

We shared the same Birthday, and I hadn't  realized until first reading this obituary...I thank you for your mentorship, and my sincerest condolences to all your friends and family, you will be missed,  RIP.

Dr Sponsel was an amazing teacher and my mentor . He was one of my favorite Attending when I was doing my Residency at Texas Tech . I still remember how he would do long Hospital rounds and He would sit in patients bed or sit next to them on a chair to communicate better and would really listen to them .
He had excellent bedside manners . He was a very caring physician and I learnt so much from him . 
May he rest in peace . 
He has left great memories and knowledge. 

I have fond memories of Charles all the way thru school and at church. Sorry to hear of his early homecoming!


Jan (Bear) That was the name I knew you by for many years, until I actually heard Dr. Sponsel say your real name. There are no words that can be said to make the pain any better, but know that he was a wonderful person, a leader, a great teacher, an inovater, a mover of mountains, had a heart of gold, he was determined.  He was a great listener, mentor, a wonderful and caring friend. He knew how to put a smile on your face. But moslty he could never get tired of talking about your Jan.  You were his whole world. His face would light up when he would talk about you or when you would be calling him on the phone. We could only strive to have a relationship like yall.  May God have him in his glory patiently waiting for you to join him one day.  He will be missed.  His smile, his hugs may God grant both of yall peace.
