He served in the U.S. Navy during WW2, and following the war he attended school to become a piano tuner and technician. He and his wife, Alta, owned and operated a piano repair business in Cherokee, Iowa for many years, until moving themselves and their business to College Station, Texas in 1970. They continued to operate a piano store, and Donald also greatly enjoyed tuning pianos for Sam Houston State in Huntsville and especially for Texas A&M in College Station.
He semi-retired in 1988, and he and Alta then had more time for their grandchildren, not to mention fishing and playing golf in the Texas Hill Country. They moved to a retirement community in San Angelo in 2005, and have enjoyed many new friends and neighbors since then.
Donald is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alta; daughter Cynthia Poulson of San Angelo and son Marc (and Diana) of Helotes, TX; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister Shirleen (and Milt) Madden of Eugene, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014 at First United Methodist Church. Johnson’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
