Dorothy Jean Laza

Dorothy Jean Baird Laza went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at her home in Mereta. A service celebrating her life will be on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10:00am at the Wall Brethren Church with Rev. Tommy Tallas officiating. Burial will follow in the Mereta Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born on May 12, 1933 in Brady, Texas to Arch and Mildred Baird. At an early age she moved to San Angelo and attended San Angelo High School. Dorothy married Johnny Laza on May 23, 1953 in San Angelo and was happily married for 58 years. For most of their married life they have lived on the family farm in Mereta. Dorothy was a special education aide at Eola School and later as librarian at Eden Consolidated School District for 32 years of service. Dorothy truly loved her work as a librarian and helping the younger students with their reading skills and the older students with their research projects. She was a member of the Wall Brethren Church and loved her church and served as a Sunday school teacher and youth sponsor, assisting with bible school and Backyard Bible Club, and was always active and willing to help with the activities within the church. Dorothy enjoyed as a hobby, a lifetime love of reading.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Laza; her sons ,Alan Laza of Miles and Stephen Laza of San Angelo; one sister, Ruth Ann Reeves and husband, Barry, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hejl ,of San Angelo; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arch and Mildred Baird, and one sister, Omah Mendenhall.

Pallbearers will be John Hejl, James Hejl, David Hejl, Kent Laza, Don Zappone, and Harvey Williams.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Wall Brethren Church, Meals for the Elderly, House of Faith, or Eden School Library.
