On Tuesday, February 21, 2023 the Huckaby family lost their hero, Doug Huckaby, after a brief illness. Douglas Duane Huckaby was born on March 21, 1937 in Coupland, Texas, to Ruby and James Huckaby. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 39 years, Darlene Huckaby, his children Stacia (Randy) Ramsey, Dena (Gary) Kennedy, Darren (Dianna) Huckaby, Brook (Eric) Sandstrum, and Kristen Hernandez. He is also survived by brother Jim (Clara Jo) Huckaby. Doug is loved by 11 grandchildren: Brandon, Brianna, Brooke, Clint, Brian, Kelsey, Deen, Natalia, Jacob, Gracie, Faith,18 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduation from Fort Stockton High School where he excelled in track and football, Doug attended Hardin Simmons University where he played football. Doug graduated from Sul Ross University before starting his 35 year coaching and teaching career. His profession took him to many schools but his time coaching at Iraan and Comstock were among the most memorable. Doug kept in touch with most of his former teammates and students. If you ask 100 people who Doug Huckaby was, they would all give you a different answer--a quick-witted storyteller, an avid outdoorsman, the original West Texas coach, and an exceptional artist. All would agree, though, that there was no one like him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 25 at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel in San Angelo, Texas.
