Nov. 11, 1931 – September 10, 2021
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found; was blind but now I see.”
The lyrics to his favorite song also happened to be the way he lived his life, with amazing grace.
James Arthur Glynn was born to Tom and Alma Ward Glynn on November 11, 1931. From humble beginnings in Stanton to a humble nickname like Scutter to a humble life retired in San Angelo, he managed to accomplish amazing things. He graduated Stanton High School in 1949, enlisted in the Air Force, and later attended Sul Ross University. He married Peggy Ross in 1952, worked loyally for the Soil Conservation Service, and faithfully supported his children, Van & Jan. Over the years of his adult life, he earnestly embraced his evangelical faith, practiced what he preached as a patient peacemaker, steadily served according to scripture, made life a melody through his passion for music, and lit up his world with laughter, lyric, and love.
“Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come. ‘Twas grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.”
No doubt Scutter witnessed many miracles in his lifetime, but his life was a miracle for his friends and family to witness as well. Even through various health concerns over the last few years, he carried himself with grace, thanksgiving, and kindness. In the weakest of days, he was so thankful for his ‘daily bread’ and equally as grateful for the hands that prepared it, proclaiming “what a feast,” knowing his words had impact and living out the ‘power of the tongue’ until the very end. He entered those glorious Heavenly gates empty-handed, having given his all to those he’d encountered on Earth.
“When we’ve been there 10,000 years bright-shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.”
Now that he gets to “praise God forever” with his parents, wife, siblings, brother-in-law and daughter-in-law, he has left his ear plugs in safe keeping with his children, Van (w. Claydene), Jan Kure (Doug), and his sister-in-law Marilyn Ross (w. Van). Also left to follow in his amazing SAS footsteps are his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Rebekah (Rob, Harlie & Grayson), Daniel (Mandy, Melody & Caroline), Erin, Andrew (Brett, Noah & Aiden), Melissa (Anthony), Anna (Juan), and numerous nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones. The family would also like to thank Tammi Christal, April Lowrance, and Hospice of San Angelo for their compassionate care taking. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to your local church, favorite charity, or group in need. After all, he reminded us that we stand on holy ground everywhere we go; may we all tread intentionally, and may we all be more like Scutter. Peace be with you.
