Lovingly known as “Tia Chuy” to her many nieces and nephews and blessed with many friends, Jessie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and an inspiration to all she touched. Her life is filled with examples of how she instilled a love of learning and a love of culture. She was very proud of her Mexican roots and cultural heritage.
Jessie Marquez Galan was born in San Angelo, Texas on October 15th 1925 and at the age of two returned to Mexico with her parents Petra and Luis Marquez to establish a ranch in San Blas, Coahuila in northern Mexico. Jessie studied to be a teacher and as a young woman taught all grade levels and subjects in her one room schoolhouse that served her ranching community. A lover of the arts, she was a great dancer and teacher of Ballet Folklorico. She loved music with a passion and knew the words and melodies of all the Mexican classics. Jessie was a wonderful storyteller and poet who believed in maintaining the oral tradition of passing down history and culture. We will miss her wealth of knowledge and the wisdom of her words. Jessie also had a humorous side and seemed to have a dicho for everything: “Acercate a un buen arbol y te cubrera buena sombra” was a favorite.
Upon her return to San Angelo, Texas in the 1940s after World War II, she met and married the love of her life Raul and started a home and a family. “Familia” was the center of her heart and her life. She had a strong work ethic and a strong personality that served her well as the matriarch of the family. Her spirit, her laughter, and her love will live on forever, especially among those who knew her. Her legacy will continue through the many seeds she planted in the many hearts…”We love you Mami”.
Jessie is preceded in death by her loving husband Raul Galan, by her parents, Petra and Luis Marquez, her brothers, Ignacio and Jose Luis and her sister Arabella. She is survived by her loving brother, Fernando.
