J. D., as he was commonly called, was born February, 23 1917 in Hamlin, Texas to Osie Lacy Davis and Dillard Davis, the seventh of eight children. He grew up in Breckenridge, Texas and graduated from the high school there in 1933. He attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas receiving a B.S. degree in 1939, and a M. Ed. In 1952, he taught Band in Decatur and Nocona. Then he served 4 years in the U. S. Navy being discharged in 1945 as a Lieutenant. He married Edna Shultz from Oklahoma in Washington, D.C. on January 10, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, five sisters and two brothers. The Davises are members of the Kerrville Church of Christ. He formerly worshiped in San Angelo at Johnson Street Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and as an Elder for 34 years. He was a member of West Texas Christian Foundation which built and supervises Christian Village and Village East in San Angelo, Texas. His special ministries were the Older Singles and Visitation. J. D. was in Twin Mountain Tonesmen, a Barbershop Chorus, for a number of years and served as one of their conductors in the early years.
The Davises lived in Denton and Perryton, Texas before moving to San Angelo in 1952. J. D. taught Band, Math, and Computer Science at Angelo State University. He also taught Vocational Data Processing at Central High School, retiring in 1985. He has been a Kerrville resident since 2005.
He is survived by his wife Edna and Sisters-in-law Naomi McIntosh of Lewisville, Texas, Vandaline Gibboney of San Angelo, Texas and Loretta Durbin of Mustang Oklahoma along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his son, Doctor John D. Davis and wife Billie of Kerrville, granddaughter Elizabeth Davis of Washington DC, grandson Doctor John W. Davis and wife Kari of Kerrville, Texas and one great grandson John Preston “Cinco” Davis.
