

J.W. graduated from Denison High School in 1942, joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the Kathryn B. Sherwood in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946. Upon returning home from service, he enrolled in Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1948. This same year, he met and married Mavis Greenway of Colbert, Oklahoma. On August 30th, 1946, they married and moved to San Angelo in 1949. J.W worked in display advertising at the Standard Times newspaper for 38 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge. He served as a past president of San Angelo Downtown Lions Club and was president of Bobcat Booster Club in 1966 when the Bobcats won the state championship.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Burris (Evelyn) Hughes and sister Adeline (Jack) Howell.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife Mavis; daughter Vicki(Greg) Jefferies of San Angelo, Texas; son Randy (Belinda) Hughes of Kingsville, Texas; grandchildren Carrie Bright Ledet, Leigh (Kenneth) Paille, Kelley Hughes, Randye Lynn Baker, Andrew (Hope) Hughes, John Jefferies, James Jefferies; great grandchildren Jarrett and Clayton Hill, Michael and Preston Hughes, Trey Baker, and Luke Ledet; sister-in-law Anne Greenway McKee of Denison, Texas.
Special thanks go to Roy Guevara, Director of Hospice Clinical Services, and the Interim Hospice Staff, along with friends from First Baptist Church and Downtown Lions Club who supported and comforted Mr. Hughes and his family during these trying times. A special thank you also goes to Maggie of Interim Home Health who helped care for J.W.
Family and friends are invited to visit with the Hughes family on Monday, January 10th, 5:30-7:30 pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home. A celebration of J.W. Hughes’ life will take place Tuesday, January 11th, 11:00 am at First Baptist Church Chapel, San Angelo, Texas. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons Andrew Hughes, John Jefferies, James Jefferies and members of the San Angelo Downtown Lions Club.
