Retired Chief Petty Officer Kurt W. Kelp, age 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 14, 2018. Kurt, a native of Tomah, Wisconsin, served his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He went on to serve in the Korean Conflict and in the Pacific theatre during the Vietnam War. His career in the Navy allowed him to visit many countries in the Far East, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Following his service in the military, Kurt managed various Zale’s Jewelry stores in Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma. After a successful business career, Kurt retired a second time and made San Angelo his home where he enjoyed both family and friends.

While stationed in California during WWII, Kurt met and married the love of his life, Elaine Tafolla. They remained married for 70 years until her passing in April of 2016. Kurt and Elaine enjoyed a quiet home life, traveling on occasions, visiting with friends, and loving the many dachshunds they owned throughout the years.

Kurt remained active in all things military, especially those related to the Navy unit at Goodfellow AFB. He and Elaine enjoyed and participated in the many activities the base provided.

Kurt was also an avid student of history and through the years collected and donated many items reflecting our country's past.

Kurt is survived by two daughters, Debbie and Cassie and a son, Roland, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 2-4 PM at Johnson's Funeral Home.

Graveside services with full military honors will be Monday, February 19, 2018 at 10 AM at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Professional services provided by Johnson's Funeral Home.

Kurt's family would like to thank Doctors Ihde II and Montoya of Angelo Community Hospital and the nurses Glenn and Steve and their support staff for their diligent care while Kurt was a patient. The family would also like to thank Solaris Hospice and the Springs Memory Unit for the exceptional care and love shown to Kurt during his final days
