Lloyd Hendry, 86, passed away Sunday, September 04, 2011 in San Angelo. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday, September 08, 2011 at Johnson’s Funeral Home, 435 West Beauregard, San Angelo, with internment to follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
Lloyd was born in Stockman, Texas on May 25, 1925, the only child of Ida Mildred Campbell Hendry and Edward Admire Hendry.
He attended school in Lufkin, moved to San Angelo in 1936, and graduated from San Angelo High School in 1942. He went to work for Levine’s Department Stores, and was the Assistant Manager in the San Angelo store until 1953, when he was transferred to Orange, Texas as manager. He was promoted to District Manager during his 14 ½ year stay in Orange, and was named Boss of the Year by the Business and Professional Women in Orange in 1957. In 1968, Lloyd returned to San Angelo as manager of the downtown San Angelo store, where he served until his retirement in 1987. Lloyd was talented artistically and his decorations and signs and posters were outstanding. He shared this talent for the enjoyment and pleasure of others all his life.
Lloyd was an Optimist in the truest sense of the word and creed. He joined the Optimist Club in 1947, and served selflessly and received many achievement awards for outstanding service. He was named Optimist of the Year in 1976 in San Angelo, and was very active in starting Boys Ranch. He was also a member of the Industrial Development Board and The Downtown Merchants Association.
Lloyd was an active and enthusiastic member of the San Angelo Rotary Club, and served as President in 1997-98. His love for Rotary and its ideals, his loyal attendance at meetings, conferences and International Conventions made him sought after as a speaker at various Rotary Clubs. Two of his proudest moments were being named Rotarian of the Year for 1994-95, and receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world. In 1995-96, Lloyd was one of a handful of Rotarians who struggled and succeeded in establishing the San Angelo Rotary Scholarship Endowment Fund. In 2003, Lloyd was named President of this group.
Lloyd has served as President of the Concho Valley Corvettes and was an active member of the Early Ford V-8 Club, the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Wool Capitol Region Antique Car Club, where he served as President in 1994. Lloyd was fascinated by cars and his knowledge of all makes was amazing. He won many awards showing his cars. He was also an avid RVer and he and Leanorah traveled extensively in their beautiful RVs. They were members of the Thousand Trails Resorts club, the Rolling Rotarians, and the Rotary International RV Fellowship. Lloyd served as the Central Zone director for six years. The couple also traveled abroad many times. Their premier trip was flying the Concorde to London, then taking the Orient Express to Bath, and the English Channel express train to France, and home on the QE II.
Lloyd was formerly a member of the River Club, the LaPaloma Dance Club and the San Angelo Dinner Club, and for many years was a patron of the San Angelo Symphony. He was an active and respected member of the Tom Green County Republican party, and an associate member of the Concho Valley Republican women. He was a patron of the Angelo Civic Theatre. Lloyd was a dedicated and active member of the San Angelo Salvation Army Advisory Board, and served as chairman in 1999. In 2007, he was honored by the Advisory Board who named him Member Emeritus for his continuing interest in and devotion to the cause for which the Salvation Army exists. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of The F. Vosberg Hall, Jr and Marylou Hall Children’s Crisis Foundation for several years. He was also an original investor and booster of the San Angelo Colts baseball team.
Lloyd married Leanorah Harding aboard the S.S. Constitution in the harbor at Honolulu, Hawaii on July 23, 1988. They built their dream home at Bentwood Estates. Lloyd and Leanorah were patrons of the Celebration Bridge, and purchased two benches near the Rotary waterfeature. One was dedicated to the memory of his mother, Ida Hendry. Lloyd and Leanorah’’s bench is inscribed: “Our lives were destined to be intermingled. We cannot imagine a world without each other.”
Lloyd was an inspiration to his family and friends, and will be sorely missed. His keen intelligence, his loyalty and fairness, his ready wit, sunny and upbeat disposition and his caring, compassionate manner made him a favorite of all who knew him. He was a special person who touched many lives in a positive way, and will be remembered as one who never knowingly hurt another human being.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Leanorah, who was the light of his life; two sons, John Hendry of Richardson, Texas, and Jay Hendry of San Angelo, grandchildren Tyson and Brandy Hendry of Atlanta, Saresa Hendry of Atlanta, Joshua Hendry of Richardson, Texas, and great-grandson Liam. He is also survived by stepson Michael Huddleston and his wife JoLynne, and their children, Jason Huddleston and Jennifer Green and husband Kalen, and their children Sara Lindsay and Jackson, all of Spring.
His body will lie in state at Johnson’s Funeral Home, with visitation set for Wednesday evening from 6 p.m, til 8 p.m.
