Maureen Nutt Kirksey, 78, blessed this earth on February 25, 1932. She was born to Nora and Elbert Nutt in San Angelo, Texas and jokingly called herself their “second family” because her parents were 40 and 45 years old when she was born. God kept her on this earth, to do His work, until Friday, September 3, 2010, when He called her home.
Maureen lived all her life in San Angelo. She attended Lake View High School where she participated in basketball and cheerleading and was always a proud LVHS Chief. Being a Lakeview Chief had its advantages. She met the love of her life when she was a freshman and he was a senior. Maureen and Eugene were married on February 12, 1950 and were life partners, both in marriage and in the business they grew together. They touched countless lives through their business, their church and their community with the special talents they had together. She enjoyed helping organize and attend class reunions. Upon graduation, in 1948, she enrolled in San Angelo Business College, and after completing the courses she went to work in the finance department at City Hall. Maureen loved working and did so until she was 73. She was employed for 10 years at City Hall in San Angelo, 14 months at Producers Auction, 19 years at Lipan Oil/Clifton Thomas Oil Investments, and 25 years for Swartz Oil. She also kept the books for the family business, Kirksey Auto Service and kept the fires burning until the business was sold in 2000. Maureen loved school, learning and working and would often say she wished she had never retired.
In her own words…“she wanted a girl so badly, she just knew it was impossible”, but was blessed with 2 girls and considered them the joy of her life. She managed to balance her life as a wife, business manager of their shop, working woman, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, church worker, Sunday school teacher, youth worker, neighbor and caretaker to many in San Angelo. Her passion was remembering people and their special occasions with numerous cards, phone calls, food delivery, visits and outpouring of love and support to them.
On May 11, 2010, Maureen was honored with her 40 year membership pin and a special ceremony from her beloved Desk & Derrick Club. Maureen joined Desk and Derrick (a professional organization for women employed in the petroleum industry) in 1969 and was honored with numerous awards while in D & D. In her own words… “It is an education organization made up of women with common interest and bonds. Some of my dearest friends have been made in D & D”. In her desire to continue education, Desk and Derrick provided the opportunities to increase her knowledge of the oil and gas industry; therefore bettering herself.
Maureen worked with the youth in church for many years and often said working with the young people was such a blessing and kept her feeling young. She served her church in many capacities throughout the years but especially enjoyed being the funeral luncheon coordinator the last several years.
Throughout her life she participated in youth choir, girl scouts, field trips, mission trips, summer camps, Tex Ann trips, and anything to do with wedding showers, baby showers, graduations, birthdays, and family gatherings.
She practiced and lived her faith and was a true servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She lived to serve God by ministering to others. She had a way of making everyone feel very special.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband and life partner of 59 years, E. Eugene Kirksey, her parents, her sisters Alyne Rodgers and Eva Nola Wills, and brother Carlton “Corky” Nutt.
She is survived by her daughters, Lanise Davidson and husband Charlie of Midland, Texas, Kristi Kirksey of San Antonio, Texas, four granddaughters, Myndi Easter and husband Christopher of Plano, Texas, Meghan Davidson of Midland, Texas, Meredith Hill of Lubbock, Texas and Malloree Hill of Greely, Colorado. Mom had a never give up, never give in, always forgive, stay busy, positive attitude of life. In her own words…”God has blessed our life so much. There is no way we can list all he has given to us; health, happiness, two lovely daughters and sons’-in-law, four beautiful “grand girls” and the joy of living/serving. Life is always busy for us, and I can’t imagine anyone being bored or finding life dull. There is so much I want to do. I’ll have to live longer than Noah if I get to fulfill all my want to’s. By the way…I’m still looking for the perfect part-time job!”
We will miss our friend, our care giver, our mom, our Muer! You truly made us all want to be a better, more caring, more giving person. We will see you in a more organized, efficiently running Heaven. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.
