Mike loved being in the great outdoors, whether it be playing golf, hunting/fishing, or just sitting in his lot enjoying a warm breeze. Mike’s truest joy, however, was spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. Mike would move mountains to enjoy time with his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to play or engage, and savored the blessing that is being a grandfather.
Mike’s greatest quality was his heart. Mike recognized and admitted his flaws and mistakes and, more importantly, understood that we are all imperfect beings deserving of forgiveness and kindness. Mike never expected anyone to be better than they were and chose to accept them as they were, following the timeless Golden Rule.
“Mike never felt like my father-in-law in the sense most people feel about their in-laws. Instead he felt like an old friend and every visit was a game of catch-up in our lives. I never felt compelled or obligated to prove to Mike that I was worthy of Jacie- he raised her to decide her own worth and trust her judgement. He understood that love and marriage require work and he only ever asked that I be willing to put in the work to keep her from running back to him. When he would visit, not only would his grandkids become excited but I would too because I loved seeing the joy in his eyes when the kids would hug and play with them. And as Tamzyn told us, so long as we remember having fun with him it’s like he’s still with us.”- Linden
