Rachel Chavez Luna, 72, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 16, 2023, with her husband of 44 years by her side at Shannon Medical Center. Rachel was also known as Thooka, Mom, and Gmom by her grandchildren. Rachel was born in San Angelo, Texas, on August 12, 1950, to Lupe and Juan S. Chavez. Rachel married the love of her life Fidel Luna Jr. on April 12, 1979, in San Angelo, Texas. The two of them became an instant blended family. On October 14, 1980, they welcomed their firstborn child, a baby girl. Rachel was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and friend to many. She was a member of Trinity Fellowship Church. Rachel worked at GTE/Verizon for many years until she retired in 2007 to spend time with her husband and grandchildren.
Rachel lived her life; through simple pleasures, chatting with friends and family, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. Rachel had a strong ability to reach people deeply; and positively. She always knew how to brighten your day. She was a ray of sunshine. Rachel was not only a Mother-Grandmother to her kids and grandchildren, but those who have met her have also thought of Rachel as their second mother or grandmother. She always treated those like her own kids and grandchildren. She loved them and always cared for them like her own.
Waiting for her at the gates of Heaven with open arms are her parents, two brothers, grandparents, a nephew, a niece, and past family members. Remaining to celebrate her life include her husband of 44 years, Fidel Luna Jr.; daughter, Angela Davis, son Santiago Torres Jr. and wife Ellen, and daughter Adriana Luna; grandchildren Drew Davis, Nicholas Davis, Noah Davis, Ashlyn Torres Flores and husband Andrew Flores, Aaron Torres, A’ryana Luna, and her little “Pancho'' Elijah Luna; great-grandchildren Andrew Flores and Baby Boy Flores; Aunt Carmen Ramirez, nieces Sandy Chavez, Kathy Chavez, and Barbara Chavez; nephews Johnny Chavez, George Chavez Jr., and Scott Chavez; and several special cousins and family friends.
An open visitation will be Friday, March 10, 2023 and Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Home. Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life, which will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 3:00 pm. In honor of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, we would like our family and friends to wear her favorite color purple.
Pallbearers will be James Ramirez, Daniel Ramirez, Jaime Mata, George Chavez Jr., Scott Chavez, Joe Zapata Jr., Michael Fuentes, and Tristen Garcia.
