Raymond Martinez Holguin (Uno) loving father and friend to all, age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 24, 2018. Raymond lived with his daughter’s family in Frisco, Texas for the last 11 years. Originally named Reymundo Holguin (or King of the World as he preferred), Ray was born January 23, 1928 to Anselmo and Jesusita Martinez Holguin in Mertzon, Texas. He met the love of his life, Frances Ponce, and they married October 28, 1956.
Education was Raymond’s passion in life. He graduated with honors from Howard Payne College with a Business and Spanish Degree. He also attended and graduated from San Angelo College, the European Division of the University of Maryland and Texas Tech College. In high school, he played the violin in the orchestra and was first chair; a gift he had inherited from his father who was also a violinist.
Raymond served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. From 1946-1949 he served in Fairbanks, Alaska where he met famous aviator Charles Lindbergh. He also met General Douglas MacArthur when he came to deliver a speech to the troops. From 1953-1970 he served at Goodfellow AFB, Texas; Osan, Korea; Frankfurt, Germany and Iraklion Station Crete, Greece. He served as a paralegal and retired in 1970 as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force.
Upon retiring from the military, he worked for the County government for 25 years. From April 1970-74 he served as Child Support Administrator for the Tom Green County Attorney’s Office. From January 1975 to February 1976 he served as a Line Probation Officer for both adult and juvenile probation system. He was one of the first Hispanics to hold the Chief Probation Office for Adult and Juvenile Probation System from February 1976 until his retirement in 1995. His greatest work accomplishment was his working relationship with everyone. Everyone who met and worked with Raymond liked and respected him. He had a generous nature and a beautiful, kind soul. While living with his daughter’s family in Frisco, TX he was very active with the Frisco Senior Center and was very loved and spoiled there. He was so funny and charming and will be truly missed by friends and family.
Raymond is survived by his sister Julia Martinez of San Angelo, son and daughter-in-law David and Melissa Holguin of El Paso, Texas, as well as his daughter and son-in-law Melissa Holguin Ax and Henrik Ax of Frisco, Texas. He has 5 grandsons: Matthew Holguin of San Angelo, Jacob and Simon Holguin of El Paso and Niklas and Henrik Ax, Jr. of Frisco, Texas in addition to many nieces, nephews and relatives.
Visitation will be held from 6 – 8PM Tuesday May 29 with a Rosary recited at 7:00 P.M.at Johnsons’s Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday May 30 at 10:00 A.M at St. Mary’s Catholic Church followed by interment at Johnsons’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Afterwards, a luncheon will be served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
