Ruth Barrera Hernandez, 80, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, October 8, 2010. Ruth, “Cuca” as she was fondly called by her friends, was born on March 20, 1930 in Ft. McKavett, Texas to Yelafonsio and Catalina Barrera.
Our mother lived in Ft. McKavett and Menard in her early youth and adulthood. In her youth she was a real “cowgirl”, riding on cattle drives. In Menard she was a loving mother to six children and an involved member of the community. She loved the outdoors, country music and helping other people. In 1970 she moved to Oklahoma where she worked as a med aide, a private caregiver and was the proud owner of a bar at the Jamesville Y. She moved back to San Angelo in 1994 to be close to her daughters and grandchildren. Our mother loved to travel on the bus. She said it was the people on the bus who always liked to talk and mom loved a good conversation. She became a member of the Order of Franciscans and was a devout Catholic. Our mother’s greatest love and concern was always her family.
She is survived by her children Rebecca Callan, Dilly Nunez and husband Hector, Barbara Martinez and husband Hector, all of San Angelo, TX; Phillip Hernandez of Magnolia, TX; James Hernandez and Rath Webster of San Diego, CA; and a sister Eva Barrera of Austin, TX. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Michael Houston Hernandez, sisters Christina Ramirez, Josephine Antu and Mikki Barrera, and a brother John Barrera.
