Santos Calderon Elizondo, beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2011. Santos was born on March 4, 1938 in Zaragoza, Coahuila Mexico to Santos and Petra Elizondo. He later moved to Del Rio, Texas where he was valedictorian of the 1960 San Felipe High School Senior Class. While performing in the high school band, Santos met the love of his life Leonor Garza. They married in 1961 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. After a stint in the US Army, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Angelo State University and later received his master’s degree from Texas A&M in College Station. He was a proud Texas Aggie. He began his teaching career at John Glenn Jr. High School in 1967 and in 1972 he became a school principal at Rio Vista Elementary. “Mr. E”, as he was often called, was passionate about his students and his staff. He touched many lives through his work in education. He was also very passionate about the Lord Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Iglesia Bautista Oriente where he taught Sunday school classes, was active in the men’s group and often led church services in a variety of different capacities. He also traveled to Peru on mission trips where he continued the Lord’s work in various villages throughout the region. Santos is survived by his wife of 50 years, Leonor Garza Elizondo; his two children, Elsa Estela Elizondo Cordera and husband Joseph Cordera of The Woodlands, and Santos Elizondo and wife Stacie Smith Elizondo. He was adored by his only grandchild Sophia Grace Elizondo who recently said “Papa” for the first time. Santos is also survived by his brother Jesus Elizondo and his sister Isabel Elizondo and many numerous nieces and nephews. Santos was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Elias Elizondo and his sister Guadalupe Elizondo Aguero. Thank you to those who came to sit with Santos, called, sent cards, did the chores, brought food, and supported us in prayer; it meant so much to us, may the Lord bless you. Special thanks to Hospice of San Angelo.
