Susan Kay King of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on August 13, 2026, surrounded by the love she so freely gave to others. Born on June 5, 1960, in San Angelo, she lived a life marked by selflessness, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to lifting those around her.
Susan was an extraordinary woman who always put others before herself. She taught across the United States and concluded her career at Lake View High School in San Angelo, where she did the Lord’s work each day. There she ensured students felt loved and cared for, and she challenged them to become the best versions of themselves. Susan was truly loved by her Lake View family and friends. Her personal slogan—“Make a difference and be kind”—was more than words; it was the guiding principle she lived and preached until she could no longer speak. A true leader and inspiration, Susan was deeply loved and respected by the countless lives she touched.
Above all, Susan was an amazing mother and Grammy. She loved her daughters, Laura and Lisa, with a boundless and unconditional love that knew no limits. Every moment with them was filled with her fierce devotion and quiet strength. And her granddaughter, Ashlyn Grace, was her greatest pride and joy—the light of her life and, as we all know, her absolute favorite. She shared a deep and enduring bond with her sisters, Julie and Melissa, loving them with the same wholehearted devotion that defined every relationship she held dear.
She is survived by her daughters, Laura Thomas (Matt) and Lisa King; her beloved granddaughter, Ashlyn Grace Thomas; her sisters, Julie Quam (David) and Melissa Murphey (Charles); four stepbrothers and stepsisters; and countless nephews and nieces.
Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Sandy Whittley; her father, Hubert Whittley; her brother, Ricky; and many other family members and friends.
We take comfort knowing Susan is now dancing in heaven. To the students who feel her absence most deeply: remember that she is still watching over you. She continues to want the same things for you that she always did—make a difference, and always be kind.
Susan’s light remains in every life she brightened and in every act of kindness carried forward in her name.
