A.L. Hernden went home to his Lord, Jesus Christ, on March 2, 2022, at the age of 83. A.L. was born March 8, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas and attended Central Catholic High School, St. Mary's University and St. Mary's Law School.
A.L. loved to hear and share great stories; he could often be found at the head of a table full of family and friends telling a boisterous story that he couldn't get through without laughing during the telling of the epic tale. Many were based on his own adventures, as anyone who knew A.L. can attest he lived a full and bold life. An unrelenting defense attorney and litigator, A.L. was passionate about advising and mentoring young law students and attorneys, as well as any friend or family member whose career he could lend a fresh perspective on. He also spent a lot of his time over the years, convincing young adults that they should get a law degree and there are quite a few lawyers that would not have gone to law school if it were not for his coaxing.
He loved people and being around them, and would do anything for a friend, acquaintance, or people down on their luck. He was generous by nature and always collected all kinds of his favorite things, such as watches, wine, gourmet chocolates and treats, for the sole purpose of keeping them in his car or office to give away. A.L. would buy stacks of his favorite books to share his enjoyment of each by giving a copy to every friend and family member.
His whole adult life, A.L. played tennis just about every day, even when traveling. In his later years he swam half a mile a day until very recently. He had an incredible work ethic and went to his office daily, even after covid started. He was a man of many passions, including real estate, oil and gas, fishing, hunting, reading, and traveling.
He loved his family dearly, and especially loved spending time in Port Aransas and La Jolla with his adoring wife, Charlotte, always by his side. He also was genuinely interested in what each of his children and grandchildren were up to and always had words of encouragement or advice to give.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Hernden, and stepchildren, Stepanie Brown, and Jim Orlando.
A.L. is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Charlotte Hernden; by his daughter Jennifer Hernden; his sons, John Hernden (Martha) and Michael Hernden; stepdaughter, Miriam Campion (Bernie); son-in-law, Tim Brown; grandchildren, Mallory Sparr, Richard Sparr III, Wesley Sparr, John Patrick Hernden, Hope Hernden, Carolyn Campion, Courtney Campion, William Campion, Timothy Brown, and Parker Brown.
He is also survived by his sister, Betty Stout and his nieces Celeste Brown and Teri Wind; nephew, Shawn Brown (Nicole) and many other extended family members and loved ones.
Memorial will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at 6:45pm at Porter Loring Funeral Home.
The Rosary will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at 1:00pm at St. Matthews Catholic Church, immediately followed by the funeral services at 1:30pm.
