Al was truly the life of the party—a funny, spirited presence with a big heart and a personality that filled every room he entered. He was also a man of quiet strength and resilience, facing life with perseverance and determination. Known for his humor and quick wit, he had a way of bringing people together and leaving lasting impressions. Though impatient at times, those qualities were balanced by deep loyalty, love, and an unmistakable passion for life.
Al’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his daughters, Haley Gavegan, Briana Gavegan, Blythe Appleby, and Hana Bratton, along with their mother, Trish Gavegan, who he spent most of his life with. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness, and by his siblings, Janis Scott, Judy Freeman, and Gary Gavegan.
A celebration of life service will be held on January 17, 2026, at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, Texas 78212.
The service will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception from 3:00–5:00 p.m., where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate Al’s life on his birthday.
In lieu of donations, the family welcomes flowers to be sent in Al’s honor.
