So sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one and my friend, Al Perkins. He will be greatly missed in the gas patch. He was a good and honest man and I enjoyed working with him.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I regret that I will not be able to attend the funeral with Tom. Al was a wonderful man and our association with him and Rio Tex holds many wonderful memories. In some ways Al was a larger than life figure. His sense of humor and 
his big heart drew many people to him.

To: Al From: Stanley Perkins Al would have chosen the place doing his life?s work though maybe not the time, to go to the Great Beyond. Nobody, or most people, ever want to leave this worldly place or their loved ones and friends; but given that we must, few people could probably choose exactly where and how as well as Al did. He has often said to me that when he went, it would be at the work he loved, and hopefully fast. Al could not tolerate incapacitation or inactivity in his chosen life?s work. I first met Al on the telephone. I can?t remember who called who first, but I know Al always said he called me ? to complain he was getting all my bills in the mail and I must be getting his checks. Of course, I claimed the opposite. The truth lay somewhere in-between ? the real problem being in those early days of our Independent Oil Operator careers, there were more bills than checks. We continued our close friendship from that day forward ? helped by our both being avid Aggies. Al was the consummate oilman. He did it all, and he did it well. He was a geologist, landman, wildcatter, reservoir and production engineer. But above all, I think he was one of the finest drilling engineers in this country. In his early days he drilled wells from the humid heat among the rebels in Cuba where he earned the distinction of being on Castro?s most-wanted list ? through the swamps of Louisiana, to the frigid plains of the Dakotas. It was the snow and ice of the Dakotas that made Al decide he never wanted to live anywhere north of Boerne, Texas. Al was a hard-charging, dedicated oilman, often appearing to be a no-nonsense, tough businessman. Though sometimes he tried, he could not hide from those who knew him well that soft, compassionate loving side. He dearly loved his wife, Nanci, and his two sons, Kyle and Al T., both of whom he often spoke with great pride. And then came his grandson. I couldn?t believe how Al would puff up with pride and break into a big smile when he talked about Colton. He was a faithful, loving son who greatly admired his Mom, worried about her, visited her often and always saw to her needs. I would often chastise Al for being a workaholic, telling him he needed to slow down and relax. He would fire back at me and say, ?Stanley, I?d rather be buying a pumpjack than goofing around doing nothing.? Doing ?nothing? meant anything else besides working at looking for and drilling another oil field! Many years ago, I talked Al into what I think may have been his and Nanci?s first vacation in more than a decade ? perhaps since I had known him. That trip was to the Cayman Islands. There he couldn?t get off the Island to go back to the office! Then there was San Miguel Allende, Mexico. He almost NEVER forgave me for that one! And then numerous trips to visit us in Colorado, and various other short trips a long vacation to Al was 3 days of driving 80 miles per hour, never stopping for a rest stop for poor Nanci! But on all of these memorable trips together, we had a marvelous time. I?m not always sure how much Al was enjoying it, but I know deep down he did! As we would careen down the left side of the road Al, of course, driving in the Caymans, or on a very narrow road in Mexico and around sharp curves with steep cliffs on each side in Colorado, I would be terrified but would say, ?Gee, Al, isn?t this beautiful country?? hoping he would slow down! I would look over at him, and his fingers would be trumping the steering wheel and he would have this ?starry? stare in his eyes. ?Yup, it sure is, Stanley.? And I?d know where his heart and mind were ? back there somewhere in an unknown oil patch! Al has gone to that unknown Oil Patch, and I know he?s in his own Heaven now. I can see him bending over a structure map or a new deal with his old partners, Gene Perkins and Herb Davis, and fellow wildcatter Mark Eidelbach; and last, but certainly not least, his father another wildcatter, from whom he inherited and learned his trade. And you know what? I?ll bet Al has already sold a piece of that deal to St. Peter. We all love you, Al ? and save a piece of that Deal for US when we get there. And, oh yeah ? Gig ?Em!
