Alene Marie Bull Boerner, 88, a resident at Independence Village, in San Antonio, died Sunday, September 14, 2014, while recovering from heart surgery, in the loving presence of her husband and family.
Born March 25, 1926, to Agnes Nitsch and August Paul Bull, she was a life-long resident of San Antonio, attending St. Cecilia's Grade School and St. Mary's High School. After graduating from high school she worked five years for Groos National Bank. For nine years she lived in downtown San Antonio on Losoya Street, in an apartment above her parents' candy store named August P. Bull Candy Company, located on the San Antonio River before the Riverwalk.
While attending St. Cecilia's, Alene met her future husband Robert (Bob) Boerner, Sr. They lost contact after grade school but were reacquainted in 1946 when they both joined a Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. Alene and Bob began dating in September of 1947 and were married on May 31, 1948 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in San Antonio. Their wedding reception was held at the Menger Hotel, where a picture of their wedding party is still on display.
Alene had nine children and was a busy and dedicated homemaker. In addition to caring for her family, she spent countless hours sewing, making clothing for all of her children. Later in life her love of sewing evolved into crafts and scrapbooking and her summer craft camps for her granddaughters "Camp Nana." She was very proud of the family heritage book she created for all of her children and grandchildren which was filled with photos and stories of the entire family's history. Because of her love of family history, genealogy research became a passion of hers. Her dining room table often filled with her genealogy files and old family photos. Alene also loved to travel and she and Bob were fortunate to take many cruises and trips all over the world. Many of their favorite trips were with their dear and longtime friends Jerry and Lofty Hall.
Alene was an active volunteer at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, and many organizations; including St. Mary's University Junior Guild, Catholic Daughters, The Sultanas, The "39ers" from the St. Cecilia's class of 1939, Birthright, and many others. She was the consummate organizer, ready to plan and celebrate the events within the family and communities in which she belonged.
Alene and Bob were blessed with many good long-time friends and neighbors over the years. They were recently saddened by the loss of their dear friend of over 80 years, Margaret Hansen. Alene and Bob both especially cherished the many Catholic priests and nuns who provided love and spiritual guidance to them as they met life's joys and challenges. Alene was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, was a founding member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and raised their children at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and School.
Alene is survived by her husband of 66 years and friend of 82 years, Bob Boerner, who said, "she was my best friend"; as well as eight of their nine children: Jim Boerner of Tuscon, AZ, Kathy Fandel and husband Tim of San Antonio, Peggy Miller and husband Alvin of Austin, Larry Boerner and wife Cheryl of Tahoe Vista, CA, Cindy Isaacson and husband Alan of Austin, Patti Boerner, and Eddie Boerner of San Antonio, Jerry Boerner and wife Jeannette of Alpharetta, GA; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Nick Dehlinger; and two special cousins, Stanley Paris and Maxine Frederich. Alene was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Audrey Dehlinger; and her son, Augie Boerner.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains, and staff at the Methodist Stone Oak Hospital and LifeCare Rehabilitation Hospital for their loving and tender care.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the Rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North Chapel.
