

Alfonso (known as AL and AC) was born on November 10, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas and was 71 yrs. old. On July 24th, 2023 Alfonso passed away surrounded by his devoted wife Patricia and children Sharline, Justin and Manuel and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Alfonso and Albina Gonzales and Brother Jose (Joe) Gonzales.
Al graduated from Fox Tech High School with honors from the ROTC program. He continued his interest and passion for the military with the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1973 he trained at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California in the Third Battalion, Platoon 3110. Graduating in February 1974. His platoon was activated during the Vietnam War. While in route to Vietnam it was announced that the war was over. He went on to be stationed in Egypt, Italy and Hawaii.
Al was a dedicated Marine and excelled, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Specialty title of Rifleman, Professional Tech with Small Arms and received Rifle Expert badge, National Defense Service Medal and Good conduct Medal. He left the Marines with an Honorable Discharge.
He moved back to his hometown in San Antonio, Texas where he continued his military career. Joining the Texas National Guard as a Sergeant and was an (MP) Military Police. Also, performed in Border Patrol assignments. He served 20 years and retired with Honorable Discharge.
He worked in Civil Service at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He was a supervisor in the Nutrition Care Dept. of the hospital. Receiving a multitude of certificates of appreciation, achievements, and awards. Retired after 40 years.
He was a fan of sports - Raiders (football), Spurs (basketball), Wrestling legends and bowling. He bowled in local leagues and National tournaments in various states. He loved adventure and travel frequently vacationing with his family at the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Mount Zion, Utah, Santa Fe New Mexico, Las Vegas, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Alfonso was married to Patricia. He is survived by his children Sharline Anne (husband Alex), Justin Lee and stepson Juan Manuel Martinez. Grandchildren Misha and Alejandro (AJ) Flores. Brothers Roland Gonzales (wife Irene) Ricardo Gonzales (wife Norma), Sisters- Mary G. Perez, Isabel Orona (husband Raul), Elvia Solis, Frances Gonzales and numerous Nieces and Nephews whom he loved.
He dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart. Al was a loving, caring gentleman who was respected and loved by all his family and many friends. Alfonso will be dearly missed. May he Rest in Peace in the Glory of God.
A visitation for Alfonso will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A rosary service will occur Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218.
