A. Eugene Gerber, 88, of San Antonio, Texas, died on Friday, August 25, 2023. He was born April 9, 1935, in Springfield, Illinois. He married Betty Mueller in 1955. Together they had three children, Chelley, Linda and Chip.
Gene was a race car enthusiast, a bicyclist, and he enjoyed his many hours of walking along the San Antonio River. He always had a need for speed. It was hard to keep up with him. He enjoyed traveling in his motorcoach following the races. He also ran a car at the Salt Flats in Utah at 215 miles per hour.
He was a longtime activist in historic preservation and was involved in the development of many downtown Springfield landmarks.
He is survived by his son Chip (wife Dianne) of Florida; two daughters Chelley Gerber of Springfield and Linda Gerber of San Antonio; and two grandchildren Kristopher (wife Leah), Kelsey Thorne (husband Bill) and five great grandchildren.
Celebration of Life will be held in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, September 16.
