He was born on March 29, 1910, to August Schmitz and Emma Kopf Schmitz, in Paterson, New Jersey.
All of his family preceded him in death. The Schmitz family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma when Al was only one year old. Al lived there until 2003 when he and his wife, Opal moved to San Antonio to be with her daughter.
Opal preceded him in death and he died peacefully at home with loved ones nearby. Al and Opal Campbell Rummage were married 42 years, separated only by her death.
Al worked in many jobs in Muskogee over the years and he took early retirement from his last job as a civil engineer for the City of Muskogee. He was 58 and he wanted to spend more time with his bride of 4 years. They traveled and he spent time with his hobbies, photography, gardening and model boat building until he began losing his sight. He and Opal were long-time members of the York Street Christian Church in Muskogee.
He is survived by many who came to be his family later in life: Opal's sister, Ruth Norton of Tyler, Texas and her family and Opal's daughter Rosemary Starry Stauber and her children: Beverly Stauber of San Antonio, Casey Stauber of Water Valley, MS, Linda Ash and her husband, Lincoln of San Antonio, and Heirron Canela of San Antonio and by Opal's son, Dean Starry and his wife, Cheryl of Maumelle, AR. There are 9 great grandchildren.
