To the Family of Alfred Valenzuela: April 4, 2015 
I am very much saddened at the death of your husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and my friend, Val. My sense of loss must be infinitesimally small compared to yours, even having called for Val hundreds of times as Asst. District Attorney for 10 years. 
Since this, and everything that happens, is God's will, we can experience peace and victory by accepting it as such. Revelation 4:11. Death is, after all, the ultimate opportunity of saying "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven," and thereby honoring God. Romans 8:28-39. 
Did God not will His Son to be crucified? Did not His Son pray the night before, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass me by? Nevertheless, let it be as You, not I, would have it"? Matt. 26:39. And had not the Father previously, at His Son's baptism, expressed divine approval in a voice from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased"? Matt. 3:17. 
Those whom God loves, He chastises. Heb 12:5-13, Prov. 3:11-12, Rev 3:19. 
"My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing." James 1:2-4. We also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Romans 5:3-5. 
If you have hope, this will make you cheerful. 1 Thess. 4:13-17. 
God permits such trials as yours as opportunities for honoring Him, so you will react to your loss by acts of faith and hope in God, and by acts of charity for others. I have used this occasion of my loss as an opportunity to send this letter (which took me 18 years to compose) to you. 1 Thess. 4:18. Just as my loss cannot compare to yours, my small act will not compare to your reactions to God, and for others. 2 Timothy 3:16. 
Do not give up if trials come; and keep on praying. Rom. 12:12. "For us, our homeland is in heaven, and from heaven comes the savior we are waiting for, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of His glorious body. He will do that by the same power with which he can subdue the whole universe." Ph. 3:20-21. 
You must be cheered also, because you know better than I that Val echoed St. Paul's writing to Timothy, "As for me, my life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to be gone. I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now is the crown of righteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day; and not only to me but to all those who have longed for His Appearing." 2 Timothy 4:6-8 
Peace family, God loves you. Isaiah 43:4. So do we. Matt. 19:19. 1 Thess. 3:12-13.
