Alfredo Avila, 82, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026. Born on October 10, 1943, in Donna, Texas, Alfredo lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and achievement. He was a devoted husband, loving father, respected educator, accomplished athlete, and faithful servant of God whose legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Alfredo distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete at Donna High School. He excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field, becoming a member of the legendary 1961 Donna Redskins football team—the only state championship football team in the school's history. His athletic talent also carried him to the state basketball tournament and the Texas state track meet.
Alfredo continued his athletic career at Sul Ross State University, where he became one of the most decorated football players in school history. As a standout defensive back, he earned All-Lone Star Conference honors from 1964 through 1966 and was selected to the All-Texas College Team for three consecutive years. In 1965, he set a national record by intercepting five passes in a single game. During his collegiate career, Alfredo established national records for interceptions in a game, a season, and a career, finishing with an astounding 36 career interceptions—a Sul Ross record that still stands today. He also excelled in track and field, setting a school record in the 400-yard dash.
His extraordinary accomplishments earned him induction into the Sul Ross State University Hall of Honor in 1991 and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
Following college, Alfredo's football journey continued when he was drafted by the Washington Redskins. He later played for the San Antonio Toros and proudly represented his community, demonstrating the determination and competitive spirit that defined his character.
While his athletic achievements brought him recognition, Alfredo was most proud of his family, faith, and service to others. He was a devoted member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, where his faith guided his life and shaped the way he treated others. His commitment to God was evident in his humility, generosity, and unwavering dedication to serving his church and community. Alfredo's example was quietly inspirational—rooted not in recognition or praise, but in consistent acts of kindness, compassion, and faithfulness.
Outside of his professional and volunteer endeavors, Alfredo enjoyed golfing, spending time with family and friends, and sharing stories that brought laughter and wisdom to those around him. His warm smile, gentle spirit, and genuine interest in others made everyone feel welcomed and valued.
Alfredo was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rebecca Avila; his cherished son, Troy Avila; his brothers, Domingo Avila Jr. and Dr. Celestino Avila; his father, Domingo Avila; and his mother, Hortencia Sepeda.
He is survived by his loving children, Scott Avila, Marcus Avila, Kristen Avila, and Adrianna Avila; his beloved grandchildren, Silas Avila, Samara Avila, and Madalyn Martinez; his brothers, J.J. Avila and Oscar Avila; his sister, Yolanda Martinez; along with extended family members, dear friends, former students, teammates, and countless individuals whose lives were enriched by his presence.
Alfredo Avila will be remembered as a beloved father, faithful Catholic, respected teacher, gifted athlete, and compassionate servant. His life stands as a testament to perseverance, humility, faith, and love. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the example he set will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
May he rest in the eternal peace of God's loving embrace.
