Alice was the first of five children born to Marvin G. Lowden, Sr., and Faye Lowden on February 7, 1952, in San Antonio, TX. Being the first born, Alice was natural at nurturing and watching out for her younger sisters and brothers whom she loved deeply and protected fiercely.
Her early years were spent enjoying activities and attending Concordia Lutheran school, Sunday school, sports, and all things Concordia Lutheran Church. Alice attended and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, TX where she studied Office Education. Following graduation, she joined Ed Flake Produce Brokerage in San Antonio as an administrative assistant. Following the death of her boss, Ed Flake, in 1993 Alice bought the business, a career she would continue until her death.
As a teenager, Alice spent many summer days playing softball for the church softball team at Wilson Fields, where she caught the eye of Roger Nelson. It was love at first sight! She was truly devoted to him and on August 18, 1971, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Alice married the love of her life, Roger D. Nelson. Alice and Roger welcomed their first of two sons, Sean in 1972 followed by Marc in 1976.
Alice was a loving mother and devoted wife. She and Roger supported and encouraged their boys in their education and sports activities. She was the ultimate "soccer mom" where she and Roger made many cherished lifelong friends. In the following years she was promoted to the position of "Gran", her most cherished title of all! She continued her unconditional love and support to all her precious grandchildren in all their activities and sports. When she wasn't attending dance recitals, basketball, volleyball, or soccer games, she also enjoyed playing cards with her poker buddies, poker dealing for special events, and many fun times at the casinos. Following the death of her mother, Alice was the glue that kept the family close. She continued the traditional family gathering at Thanksgiving by hosting and preparing huge feasts for her large extended family and friends. Everyone was welcome, and some years the attendance exceeded 40-50 people.
