

Alice Offley Walther Roos died peacefully on January 13, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Roos and his son, Steve Roos, and by her three children, Henry Robert Walther, Jr., Peggy Walther Winton, and Anne Walther Zanikos. They, their spouses and her five grandchildren will miss her greatly. Born in 1928 to a US Army officer and his wife in Baltimore, MD she attended high school at The Madams of the Sacred Heart Convent School, in San Francisco, CA. Later, she moved to San Antonio and married Henry Robert Walther, a promising architect. Widowed at an early age, she continued her education, earning a Masters of Arts and Education and a Masters of Theological Studies. As a single mother, she raised her three children while pursuing a career in special education. In 1968, she moved her family for one year to the US Virgin Island of St. Croix where she launched the first special education program in the public school there. After retiring from Region 20 Education Service Center, she became the director of retreats at the Oblate Retreat House and was elected to the board of Retreat Center International. Alice devoted years of volunteer services to her church and various charitable organizations. She will be remembered for her zest for life, sense of humor, and compassion for all, particularly those with special needs. A memorial mass will be held in her honor on Monday, January 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.
