December 26, 1934 – January 9, 2016
Allen G. Korn of San Antonio, beloved husband, father, and Pop Pop, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born in Washington, D.C. to Philip and Sophie Korn, Allen is survived by Idella, his loving wife of 57 years. Allen is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Phoebe Korn Silver.
Allen was extremely proud of his sons Gary (Susan) of Seguin and Greg of Canyon Lake, but his grandchildren, Travis, Sarah, and Rachel were his pride and joy. Allen, or Pop Pop as he was called by his grandchildren, rarely missed any of their youth, high school, college or semi-pro games, meets, or performances, and his distinctive whistle always let them know he was in the bleachers. He enjoyed telling friends and strangers alike of their latest accomplishments.
Allen loved sports and was a lifelong passionate Washington Redskins fan. He coached his sons in football, baseball, and basketball and devoted many hours to youth sports. He helped set up the Hayfield Athletic Club for boys and girls sports in Alexandria, VA, and he also helped establish the Hawks Booster Club at Hayfield High School where he served as president for several years. Later he volunteered as a player sponsor at the Army All American Bowl in San Antonio.
Allen served in the US Army before earning an accounting degree from George Washington University. Allen enjoyed many great times at the Hangin’ Tree Saloon where he had an interest, and he had many friends at the Northeast Senior Center where he set up memorable day trips for the members. Allen kept in touch with his Army buddies and they along with their wives shared many vacations together. Allen loved visiting the casinos and taking cruises with his family. On his 50th anniversary family cruise, he earned the nickname “Shooter” for the week because his dice rolling made money for everyone at the tables. Allen also enjoyed the annual fishing trips to Port Aransas with his sons and grandson. It was hard to believe any fish were caught with all of the joking and laughing on the boat and Allen always claimed all the big fish in the pictures after the trip.
We will miss our husband, father, and Pop Pop but will always remember his love, his dedication to his family, and his sense of humor.
There will be a private family service at Sunset Memorial Park and a celebration of Allen’s life at a later date. Memorial contributions be made on behalf of Allen to ALSAC/St. Jude attn: Chance Weaver 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
