Alma Jane Warren

She is survived by her loving husband of over 55 years, Bruce Huntington Warren, M.D., whom she met on a church youth sleigh ride in Duluth, Minnesota, when she was only 15 and he 17. Together they raised five children: Richard B. Warren, Mobi Warren spouse Philip Phillips, Leslie Ann Barton spouse Larry Barton, all of San Antonio, James L. Warren spouse Margaret of Los Angeles, and William L. Warren spouse Wendy of Herndon, Virginia. Her grandchildren: Emily Ho, Bruce Ho, James Phillips, Drew Barton, Michael Barton, Sarah Jane Barton, Megan Warren, and Bronwen Warren will always remember her energetic, creative, and kind nature. Indeed all who knew her were touched by her deep acceptance and compassion for others. Her loving kindness extended to animals as well; she took in many homeless and injured cats and dogs over the years. She is also survived by her brothers, Charles Berry, James Berry, Richard Berry, and Lou Berry, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Albert and Marydel Marolt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Among her many talents, she had a beautiful singing voice and an exceptional whistling ability, often communicating with mockingbirds in her back yard.

Always a scholar, she graduated 4th in her class of over 400 at Duluth Central High School. She earned her B.A. Magna cum laude at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and was installed in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

After raising her family, she returned to school to earn her Master of Social Work from the Worden School of Social Services at Our Lady of the Lake University. Following graduation she served as Chief of Social Services, Director of Admissions, and Human Rights Officer at the San Antonio State School. After retirement she continued to serve as a volunteer on the Volunteer Services Board for several more years.

She shared a passion for history, culture, and the arts with her husband with whom she traveled throughout the United States and the world both during and after his career in the Air Force.

She was a faithful member of St. John's United Methodist Church of San Antonio for over 45 years.

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Wilford Hall Hospital who provided her such excellent and caring medical treatment for many years. Special thanks go to hematologist Mark DeLeon, M.D., and nurses Jan Booth and Barbara Henry, whose compassion was so comforting to her during the last year of her life. They would also like to acknowledge the wonderful care and support of VITAS Home Hospice Care during the weeks preceding her death.

Her family and friends celebrate the beauty of her life and give thanks that we were able to share it.
