The family of Brad Groves will celebrate his life with a memorial service Sunday, November 28 at 4 pm. in the main sanctuary of University United Methodist Church, 5084 DeZavala Road. Rev. Charles W. Anderson will officiate.
Brad died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with lung cancer. His wife of 30 years, Lauren Christensen Groves, was by his side along with their children, Brad's parents and other family members.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas on August 29, 1956 and graduated from Holmes High School in 1974 before going on to Texas A&M University to study civil engineering. After graduating from Texas A&M Cum Laude in 1978, Brad went on to earn a graduate degree in Urban Planning from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
When he returned to San Antonio Brad became a partner with Groves & Associates Civil Engineers where he worked in partnership with his father, also a civil engineer, for 25 years. Brad was recognized throughout the state for his expertise in water resource development, master planning, waterway development and water treatment. In 2002, Groves & Associates joined Tetra Tech where Brad served as Divisional Vice President and project engineer.
Throughout his career, Brad maintained his registration and certification in multiple states and was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Water Environment Federation and the American Water Works Association. He was elected to lead the Trinity Glen Rose Aquifer Board and also served on the Texas Water Resource Board where he worked tirelessly to conserve and manage our precious natural resources.
Brad was also active in his church and community. He was an early member of University United Methodist Church and was instrumental in design and planning for the church in its formative years. He was also active in the Downtown Rotary Club and took an active role in the Rotary Youth Exchange programs throughout the years. Brad served as a volunteer board member for Youth Alternatives and the Roy Maas Foundation for many years and taught his children by example to always find time to help others. His integrity, commitment and compassion was evident in all that he did. His professional and civic contributions are many, but what Brad did best, and what will be missed most, is found in the gifts he shared as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his wife Lauren, son Gregory, son Taylor and daughter-in-law Haley Hickey Groves, daughters Christen and Ali Groves, parents Alvin and Janie Groves, sister Crissy Groves Cheney and brother-in-law Bill, brother Blake and sister-in-law Elva Nolan Groves, and nieces and nephews Catherine Cheney, Will Cheney, Nolan Groves, Valerie Groves, Christine Groves and Bryan Groves.
As our family gives thanks for Brad's life and the many blessings that he has shared with us, we take comfort in knowing that in the years to come there will always be a student who is benefiting from the scholarship fund that has been established in his memory at Texas A&M University. We request that in lieu of flowers, those who would like to honor Brad do so by donating to the scholarship fund in memory of Bradley Groves, Class of '78 at www.aggienetwork.com.
