Memorial services for Amil J. (Joe) Eckhart of San Antonio will be held at 10 am, Friday, October 17, 2014 at Windcrest United Methodist Church, 8101 Midcrown Drive, Windcrest (San Antonio),TX, 78239. Interment will follow at 11:30 am at Fort Sam Houston with a reception after at the Fellowship Hall at Windcrest United Methodist Church.
Amil Joseph Eckhart, the son of Amil Robert and Olive (Reed) Eckhart was born on February 17, 1929, in Dolliver, Iowa. Joe passed away October 6th, 2014 at his home in San Antonio,Texas at the age of 85.
Joe graduated from Dolliver High School and later attained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. On November 5, 1948, he was united in marriage to Beverly Ross in Estherville, Iowa. He served 33 years in the Army, Field Artillery, including four Theater Tours of Duty and retired early at the age of 47 due to health issues.
Following retirement, he was an active member of Windcrest United Methodist Church. He served as an active volunteer of Neighbors Helping Neighbors and was a member of several church committees. Joe was a member of the Ft. Sam Houston and Windcrest golf courses and voluntarily helped at both. He was also a big part of the Royal Ridge Citizens on Patrol.
Left to cherish Joe’s memory is his wife, Beverly; children, Robert (Chris) Eckhart of Boerne, Texas; Stephen (Kay) Eckhart of Vancouver, Washington; Rhonda Gwaltney of Austin, Texas; Debra (Dan) Herman of Seguin, Texas; 18 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Joe in death are his parents; his brother, Bruce and sister, Doris, son Richard Eckhart and grandsons Phillip Gwaltney and Bud Eckhart.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or a local hospice of your choice.
