Angelyn Beverly Scott was born in Meridian, Georgia, the firstborn of seven children to Deacon Phillip Palmer, Sr. and Zela Mae Hulin-Palmer. She passed away surrounded by the love of her family and leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, family, and cherished memories.
Angelyn attended Todd-Grant High School in Darien, Georgia, graduating in 1960. During her high school years, she played basketball and was a high-stepping majorette for the school band. She later continued her education at Fort Valley State College, now Fort Valley State University, in Fort Valley, Georgia.
At an early age, Angelyn was baptized by Reverend J. F. Mann and became a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church in Meridian, Georgia. She learned to cook at the age of six, and her first meal was a pot of hominy grits and smothered shrimp with onion gravy—a fitting beginning to a lifelong love of cooking and caring for others.
A summer job on St. Simons Island, Georgia, during her high school years led Angelyn to meet James Henry Scott, who would become the love of her life. The couple married on October 7, 1961, beginning a lifelong journey of love, and devotion.
Throughout her life, Angelyn was deeply committed to public service and her community. She served as president of the Officers’ Wives Club, chaired the Miss Fiesta selection committee, and held leadership roles in numerous civic and community organizations. A devoted member of Freedom Chapel, she also served as an usher during the gospel service and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. In addition to her dedication to service, Angelyn was a successful entrepreneur who owned and operated her own event and wedding planning business. Through her work, she shared her creativity, organization, and joy with countless couples and families as they celebrated life’s most special occasions.
While she found great fulfillment in serving her community and helping others create cherished memories, her greatest joy was her family. Nothing brought Angelyn more happiness than her five grandsons, who held a special place in her heart and were truly the apple of her eye.
Angelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Col. James H. Scott; her son, Alan Scott; her parents, Deacon Phillip Palmer, Sr. and Zela Mae Hulin-Palmer; and her brothers, Phillip Palmer, Jr. and Raymond Palmer.
She is survived by her son, Alton “AJ” Scott (Theresa); her daughter-in-law, Tammy Scott; her grandchildren, Joshua Scott, Jordan Scott, Joseph Scott, Jonathan Scott, and Joel Scott; her siblings, Beverly Hudley (Robert), Sam Palmer, Geraldine Green, and Emory Palmer (Linda); her sisters-in-law, Alison Palmer and Loretta Palmer; her dear friend, Earline Lemon; her godson, Brandon Lee, Jr.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Angelyn will be lovingly remembered for her warm spirit, deep faith, devotion to her family, and the love she shared with all who knew her. Her memory will continue to live in the hearts of her family and friends.
