Anita Stewart Gregory, known to everyone as Nettie, passed into peace on January 18, 2002. For many years, Nettie worked as an administrative assistant at Duke University Medical Center. She was in charge of assigning the beds for the medical complex, a task demanding great intelligence, compassion, and practical savvy. She and her husband Alonzo devoted their lives to their family and to the First Baptist Church of Durham, North Carolina, where they were members for 50 years. Nettie sang in the choir, taught Sunday school both intermediate and adult and held Bible Study class at her home. She helped many a bereaved church member or a friend with her thoughtful acts of kindness, which often included samples of homemade chocolate cake or ham biscuits. After retiring from Duke in the mid-1980's, Nettie devoted herself to helping raise her "second set of children," her grandchildren Matthew and Alison. For the last year and a half, she was a resident of Heartland Assisted Living Facility in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Alonzo and her son, Keith and is now survived by her son Kemp; her daughter-in-law, Nancy; her two grandchildren, Matthew and Alison; and three nieces, Inez Carroll and Marilyn Matthews of North Carolina and Ella Parker of Tennessee. Her unwavering belief in God, her Christian kindness, her steadfast love of family, and her infectious zest for living will never be forgotten. Arrangements with:
