August 26, 1929 – March 14, 2021
Ann Wharton Hailey met with Jesus face to face in heaven on March 14, 2021. Mimi lived a life of love, laughter and happiness and left behind a legacy of faith and hope for her family. She taught us to trust the Father in all situations and that He would always love us unconditionally. She loved us well and will continue to be a strong cord in the fabric of our lives.
Anna Mary Wells was born in Vivian, LA, to Grady Henry Wells and Texanna Davis, on August 26, 1929. She had one older brother, Steve Wells. Following the death of their mother, Texanna, Grady married Lilla Bibby Pesnell, whom Ann grew to love and call “Mom”. The family later moved to Southern Arkansas.
Ann graduated high school in El Dorado, AR, and while attending Ouachita Baptist College, met Jim Wharton. The couple married in 1950 and moved to San Antonio, where they made their home and raised children, Laurie, Tom and Susan. The children fondly recall hours of music with a family band as well as road trips together. Their home was always open to friends of all ages. Through years at Baptist Temple and Trinity Baptist Church they created many lifelong friendships. Ann was a beloved Bible teacher, prayer warrior, friend to many, and bright light to all.
After Jim’s death in 1988, Ann lived an independent life, working and enjoying her family. She welcomed six grandchildren in all. In 2002, she married Bill Hailey. The Whartons and Haileys were longtime friends and it was a joy to join as family. Bill and Ann enjoyed 16 wonderful years of marriage, many travels and great time with beloved friends. The couple spent summers in Angel Fire, NM, where they entertained many friends and family members who loved to visit the Hailey Mountain Home. Ann lovingly cared for Bill in his late years until his passing in 2018.
Ann was devoted to her work in education. She first worked in private preschools such as Little Farm School, then began work in public education. Ann served in various roles, and ultimately as an administrative assistant in the central offices of both the Northeast Independent School District and the Alamo Heights Independent School District. After retiring from public education, Ann helped to start the Buckner Fanning School at Mission Springs. She was beloved by students, parents and colleagues.
Ann is survived by Laurie Nowak, Tom Wharton (Diane), Susan Gay (Eric), Michael and Joel Hailey; grandchildren Christie, Sarah, Rachel (Wil), Hannah (Jeremy), Austin and Abigail; and great-granddaughters Nora and Hollie.
