Anna attended Thomas Jefferson High School where she met her best friend, Lupe Castellanos Vidouria and participated in the A Cappella Choir, Future Business Leaders of America, Girls Glee Club, Homemaking Club, Mixed Chorus, and served as Advisory President. Anna graduated in 1962.
She attended Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for 57 years where she was a member of The Legion of Mary, served as a Eucharistic Minister and was also a member of The Our Lady of Grace Guild. Anna and her husband had also been active in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and in the Ministry to the Sick, taking communion to those too sick to attend Mass. Anna would open up her home for months at a time to the sisters of the Convento de la Encarnacion de Jesucristo (Convent of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ) who were from Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacn, Mexico. The sisters would bring their jewelry and crafts to sell at Mi Tierra Restaurant downtown to raise money for their church back home in Mexico.
Anna and Tony owned and operated Halisco Caf for 39 years where customers were treated like family. She and her husband enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas where they enjoyed staying at Caesar's Palace. They also visited Rome, Italy where they met the Pope and frequently went to Lake Tahoe to enjoy the cold weather and snow.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 40 years, Antonio Cantu, Jr., and her brother, Simon Alva, Jr.
She is survived by her brothers, Faustino Alva, Luther Alva, Charles Alva, Valentin Alva and Pedro Alva; sisters, Genevieve A. Caverly and Eda A. Gensor and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough Ave.
