Annelise Marie Johnson was born on August 23rd, 1925 in Vedbaek Denmark, a small town north of Copenhagen, to father Ove Aksel Suaning and Emmy Marie Suaning, his wife. Mother's maiden name was Sane Kragh. Interesting to note their families were related with the Svane family being descendants of Hans Svaning born in 1504 who was also ancestor of the Svaning family. Hans Svaning was named Royal Historian having authored a History of Denmark by appointment by The King and served as teacher to the Royal Family.
Her father Ove Suaning was a teacher and later a school principal. Ann attended public schools until she was admitted to Holte Gymnasium where she graduated in 1944. Following the Gymnasium, she attended the University of Copenhagen where she completed an Associate Degree in Philosophy. Her studies were interrupted when the University was closed because of the imminent danger of the German Army arresting the entire student body because of their involvement in the Resistance. The teachers attempted to continue classes in their homes.
Ann accepted a position offered by the U.S. occupation forces in Germany with The Censorship Division mostly manned by Allied Civilians who were linguists and could assist in locating war criminals by censoring the Mail and telephone system. On a ski trip to Garmich, Ann met Don on the ski slopes at the Eibsee ----the rest is history. They married in November 9th, 1947 at the 98th General Hospital in Munich Germany, where Don was hospitalized with major injuries following a jeep accident caused by a drunk driver.
In December 1948, they were ordered to return to the U.S. so that Ann could enter the country under the War Brides Act which expired in January 1949. Following Don's retirement from the Army the family settled in San Antonio where Don started a career in real estate. Ann shortly afterwards became a realtor and assisted Don as he founded their own real estate business. During her career Ann became active at the Board of Realtors serving as chair of several committees to include, among others, Grievance, M.L.S Property Management the Professional Standards and service on the Board serving as Treasurer, Secretary and President. She also served as Regional Vice President at the State Level and as a member of the National Board. She was also a Trustee for the State Political Action Committee. She was the recipient of the Broker of the Year Award and was the first woman and only the fourth member in Board history being awarded the Distinguished Service Award.
Her greatest joy is her wonderful family--- three successful sons--- three precious daughters–in –law, six wonderful and accomplished grandkids, and five darling great grandchildren, Penny, Callie, Luke, Wyatt, and Addie. All this possible because I found a Swede on that ski slope so many years ago. A great husband and father and grandpa and great grandpa. Reminds me of the ancient truth: The best gift a man can give his family is to love their mother.
