Dr. Anthony B. Constanzo entered his eternal rest on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Tony, as he was affectionately known, was a beacon of hard work and compassion in the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. His journey on this earth was one marked by love, dedication, and a commitment to excellence in every aspect of his life.
Tony was born on March 23, 1930, in San Antonio, Texas, to Louis Constanzo and Concetta Talerico. His parents, who worked for Breckenridge Farms in Tony’s childhood years and then they formed the Constanzo Brothers’ Farms in Von Ormy for 43 years. His parents were second generation Italians who came to Texas from Lucciano, Province of Caserto, Italy. Born into a family of hard-working farmers, Tony learned from an early age the value of discipline and service. His life demonstrated a passion for education, both in his own life and cultivating a love of learning in others.
After graduating from South San High School in 1948, he received his Bachelor of Science from Texas Lutheran College in 1952, he then served 2 years in US Army as a corporal before going back to school to earn a Masters in Education, Administration and Supervision from Trinity University in 1957, and finally a Doctorate in Education and Administration from Nova University in 1984. He spent a total of 50 years in education: 8 years as a teacher and coach in both Southside and Northeast ISD, and 42 years in administration. In and out of the classroom, he loved to coach and teach in everything he did. His passion was to provide all students from every background an education, believing everyone deserved the opportunity to grow and thrive. He served as the Assistant Principal and Principal of several middle and high schools in NEISD for 12 years before moving into the Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Instruction for the district. He served in this role for 6 years before taking on the role of the First Associate Superintendent for Instruction, Personnel, Transportation and Maintenance at NEISD for 5 years. He then took his expertise to East Central ISD and served as Superintendent for 19 years and finally assisted Comal ISD as Interim Superintendent for 8 months while overseeing transition before retirement. Outside of teaching and administration, Tony took his extensive experience and knowledge in education administration and became a consultant for Vitetta Architecture in Educational Program Development. In each of these roles, Tony left a lasting positive impact on the community and made many lifelong friends and colleagues along the way.
It was important to Tony that people give back to their community, which he continued to do by serving in many different community service roles. These include being appointed Mayor of the Better Jobs Committee, ESC 20 elected representative to Texas Commissioner of Education Advisory Cabinet, Vice President and Board of Director member of the Challenger Learning Center of SA/Brooks Aerospace Foundations, serving on the Board of Directors for the Comal Public School Foundation, Solar San Antonio, and Comal Appraisal District. He assumed the role of President and Vice President for the Rotary Club of the Highlands and Phi Delta Kappa. Tony also participated in the China Groves Lions Club, Bexar County Economic Development Board, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Alamo Area Workforce Development Board, and Target 90 Educators Committee.
Tony’s dedication to hard work and excellence was contagious; many who knew him described him as professional, committed, honest, fair, tenacious, and a great judge of character. His wisdom, skill and rigor led to many professional accomplishments, such as the Freedom Foundation George Washington Honor Medal, state finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year in 1985, Outstanding Administrator from the Texas Library Association, Freedom Foundation George Washington Honor Medal, Trends in Education Award from the Southside Chamber of Commerce, the Extended Service Award from Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, Educator of the Month from Texas School Business, and a Texas Elementary and Supervisors Association nominee for District 20. To top it all off, he was even bestowed the honor of having the East Central High School Math/Science building named in his honor!
Alongside his many impressive achievements, Tony would say that his greatest accomplishment was his wonderful family. He adored his wife “Marty,” loved spending time with his family, and keeping his ranch home next door to his two sons in tip-top shape. He loved to travel—visiting 18 different countries!—and being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and visits to the Texas coast at his beach house in Aransas Pass. An ardent sports fan (especially Cowboys and Longhorn football), he loved all aspects of the game from playing to coaching and being an avid spectator. He lived a life full of passion, and leaves behind a legacy of service and love that his family and loved ones will continue to hold dear.
Anthony is preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life Martha Constanzo, and his son, Michael Constanzo. He is survived by his four children: David Anthony Constanzo, Ted Louis Constanzo and his wife Cindy, Timothy Erwin Constanzo and his wife Melony, and Gail Constanzo Richmond and her husband John. His grandchildren include Sean Wade Richmond and wife Lauren, Jason Anthony Constanzo, Cullen Joseph Constanzo and his wife Danielle, Travis William Constanzo and his wife Jaye, Hannah Claire Richmond and her husband David Rodriguez, and Cassie Jan Constanzo. Continuing his legacy into the next generation are his four great grandchildren: Sadie Jane Constanzo, Henry William Constanzo, Everett Cole Constanzo and Leif Anthony Constanzo. He is survived by his sister, Jo Ann Postert and many nieces and nephews.
Tony’s family wants to recognize the wonderful loving care and support provided to him in his home by two wonderful and loving caregivers Pat Barnes and Debbie Aguilar. Then he moved to Discovery Village Senior Living at Stone Oak. His family will be forever grateful for the support and care by the incredible caregivers and staff.
