It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Antonio (Tony), P. Cortez, 84, beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Tony passed away on January 26, 2023. We rejoice that he is at peace with our Lord and back with the love of his life, Gloria Cortez.
Tony P. Cortez was born on August 17, 1938 in Mumford, TX to parents Serapio and Georgia Cortez. Tony is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Serapio, George and Daniel Cortez, sister Sara Cortez and beloved wife, Gloria Cortez. Tony is survived by his children Sandra Beardsley (Scott), Toma Cortez (Carla), Belinda Nadalin (Stephen), grandchildren; Eric Shields (Therese), David Wesley Rodriguez (Hannah), Alison Beardsley, great grandchildren Avah and Micah, brother Eliseo Cortez and sisters Rosalie Reyna and Eva Cortez.
At the age of 5, Tony and his family moved to San Antonio in 1942 where he was raised, grew up and eventually met and married his best friend and life-long partner, Gloria in 1959. Tony and Gloria were married for 63 years and they lovingly raised their three children, Sandra, Anthony and Belinda.
Tony graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1957 where he enrolled and obtained printing vocational training. Printing was his profession for 63 years. The majority of Tony's career was spent at Mungia Printers as shop foreman where he worked for 42 years. At the age of 68 and in 2007, Tony began new employment at Allegra Printing company where he worked an additional 13 years and finally retired in 2020 at the age of 81. Tony was well respected by his work colleagues and customers. He loved his craft and the friends he made along the way. During his retirement years, Tony learned how to play acoustic guitar and would often play 50’s, 60’s and 70’s ballads and sing for his wife and children.
Our father, Tony Cortez, taught us to have a strong work-ethic, self-respect, accountability, and how to appreciate and value the things we worked for. He taught us how to give and we called him, the ultimate “worker-man”. A “handyman” with interest in plumbing, auto mechanics, carpentry, landscaping, and auto-body painting. There was nothing he would not do for his family and friends.
Our loving father left this earth a very rich man. Rich with love, respect and adoration from his wife, children, family and friends. He will be missed more than words can say and he leaves a legacy of love for everyone that knew him. We are sad to see him leave but we are happy he is no longer in pain and is at peace and together again with our mother, Gloria Cortez.
Luke 15:20-24 “And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.”_____________________________________________________________________________________There will be a private family memorial and burial service in the Spring of 2023 at Mission Park Cemetery, Dominion – San Antonio, TXThank you for your prayers, condolences, love and support. – Sandy, Toma and Belinda.
