Antonio Chavez Garcia, beloved father, grandfather, friend and community fixture, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, at the age of 81. He was 1 of 13 children. He attended school up to the 4th grade. A true jack of all trades, Antonio was a workaholic with a heart of gold, a sharp wit and infectious laugh that could light up any room. Born in Piedras Negras Coahulia, Antonio began working at the young age of 9 as a shoe shiner-a humble beginning. At age 17, he began assisting his father Higinio Garcia at work. His father worked as a tailor, with Antonio serving as his assistant. This would shape his tireless work ethic and deep sense of pride in everything he did. At the age of age of 23 he met his beloved wife Rosa Maria Garcia in his neighborhood, and he swept her off her feet. They were married on February 14, 1967, and remained married for 50 years, until Rosa’s passing. Over the decades, he wore many hats: handyman, traveler, storyteller, and above all photographer whose work captured the soul of a city, San Antonio and its’ people.
Antonio arrived to San Antonio in the mid 1960’s, initially making a living digging ditches in the construction industry and other assorted jobs. He was working hard and only making $5.00 a day. One day he walked into a camera shop across from the Majestic Theater, purchased his first Polaroid camera and the rest, as they say, is history.
For over 50 years, Antonio was a beloved fixture at Mi Tierra and La Margarita Mexican Restaurants of the historic Market Square in downtown San Antonio, where his camera became as iconic as his warm smile. He would enter the restaurants and tell everyone, “Smile Hollywood Stars”. This friendly greeting would lead to the earning of the nickname, Hollywood. Generations of families have memories framed by Tony’s lens, moments of joy, celebration, and tradition, all lovingly preserved through his photography.
Through the years Hollywood captured some of the world's most powerful leaders and famous celebrities with his charm and camera, earning him the title of San Antonio’s Paparazzi. Through his viewfinder Hollywood saw a glimpse into the lives of five American presidents from President Regan to President Obama, professional athletes, stars including, George Lopez, Vicente Fernandez, Enrique Iglesias, Cristina Saralegui to name a few, and numerous local news personalities.
He was a jokester with impeccable timing, always ready with a playful tease or funny story. His humor, generosity and relentless spirit left a mark on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Antonio is survived by his loving family and countless friends who were touched by his presence and enriched by his art. His legacy will live on not only in the photographs he took, but in the lives, he touched with his smile and laughter.
