Born on August 25, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas, Rowan was the youngest child of Dr. James Ernest Altgelt and Jean Rowan Altgelt. From a young age, Rowan was smart, independent, and loved the outdoors. He married Alexis Anderson Altgelt on June 12, 1985, and they settled in San Antonio, where he grew up. They had one daughter, Emma Elizabeth Altgelt, who became his best friend.
Rowan treasured time on the beach in Port Aransas. He read voraciously and never stopped learning. There weren’t many Jeopardy! clues or crossword puzzles that could stump him. His love of music was deep and diverse, from jazz and pre-war blues to zydeco and conjunto. Rowan made so many people’s lives brighter and fuller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Mary Susan Altgelt.
Rowan is survived by his wife of 41 years; daughter, Emma and her fiancé Douglas Laurence Kievit; brother, James Ernest Altgelt, Jr.; and nephews, James Ernest Altgelt III, and David McCullough Altgelt.
