Armando and his barbershop was a historic meeting place for hundreds of his alumni, friends and politicos.  From working class to professionals even famous people such as Carol Burnett visited.  The warmth and always friendly greeting was his trademark and he accepted all peoples in his shop without exception.   When one walked into the barber shop unos saludos amistosos y caluorosos siempre se siente en mi memoria.  Discussions were very interesting and educational and funny and I hardly saw anyone become polemical, argumentative and or aggressive.  The barber shop created a fellowship for many and was so recogniezed.   I remember in 1987 when the Pope visited San Antonio, Texas, the popemobile stopped for a wave in front of the barbershop.  That to me showed what kind of landmark the barbershop was in this city.  He spoke fondly of his days of past from his northern travels in Chicago to many other adventures in his life.  Armando always listened to you in conversation was polite and always interested in what you had to say and or contribute to the conversation and fun.  Adios amigo querido que descanses en paz y nunca se olviden de ti tus compass de esta patria de san quilmas..

What a remarkably small world !   Mando is the very same barber who cut my hair when I was in Jr High and High School, when mi Familia moved from our shanty at 816 S. Colorado to 2215 Saunders Avenue in the Fall of '65.  Little did I know back then that Mando was Joyce De Lo Santos' Uncle.  Joyce and I both went to Lanier and were 1 -year apart.  I graduated in '72 and Joyce in '73.   I also took my son, George-Michael to Mando when he was a little boy.  I have very many pleasant memories of Mando.  His eyes would always sparkle when he spoke of his years at Lanier !   He was indeed a rare breed of barber and human being because he never stopped to acknowledge his customers and would often refer to them by their first name.  He would relay stories of when he himself was a young child and saw truckloads of blond-haired / blue eyed (as he would describe them) German prisoners of war being re-located in the nearby neighborhood.   The stories he related were truly remarkable !  One of the things he was most proudest of was a picture of him having Carol Burnett signing an autograph for him, when she had traveled from LA to visit her old house here in San Antonio.  The picture was displayed on one of the walls in his barber shop.  The original house Carol Burnett was raised in as a child was catty-corner Mando's barber shop (where the Bill Miller currently stands on Commerce and Zarzamora).  Carol Burnett's house has since been moved on Commerce street right before you get to Trinity.   My sincerest of condolences to Mando's family.  I   feel truly honored and blessed to have known him, not only as a barber to my son, George-Michael and myself, but a wonderful, kind and warm hearted human being.

My heartfelt condolences to The Armando De Los Santos Family. My prayers are for The Family during this time of mourning. May The Lord grant You Peace. Mando's race is over.  Mando was on the Lanier Voks Track Team  running one of the most difficult races, The Hurdles. Mando had a smooth running style that made it easy to jump over the Hurdles. Mando was a Friend to All. His Barber Shop was a meeting place for Lanier Friends.  Mando sponsored a Basketball Team of Ex Voks Coached by Raul Zuniga.

Armando is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Guadalupe C. De Los Santos; children, Deborah De Los Santos (Danny), Lilia Lopez (Stephanie), Raul Jesus Lopez (Gina), Bianca De Los Santos (Manuel), Armando De Los Santos, Jr. (Jennifer); 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Josefina De Los Santos; nephews, Mark and Joe; nieces, Janice & June; grandson, R.J.; siblings, Joe, Blanche, Jesse and Emma.
