Bishop Barrymore was born in Cape Town, South Africa to Arthur Norman Barrymore and Magdalene Anne Schmidt on November 3, 1938. He studied theology and trained for the priesthood in South Africa and England with the society of the Sacred Mission (SSM), a monastic order in the Church of England known as the Kelham Fathers. Bishop Barrymore obtained a diploma in Theology from the University of London and graduated in Theology from Kelham Theological College in Nottinghamshire, England.
Bishop Barrymore was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon in 1967 and to the Sacred Order of Priesthood in 1968 on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels in the Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit, Guildford, Surrey, England. He served his title in various churches in England as priest, hospital chaplain, and chaplain for the Seagulls, his beloved football team.
He was an experienced sign language interpreter, serving for many years as the director and chaplain for the deaf and blind in the county of Sussex, in the south of England. He had the privilege of interpreting the Maundy Thursday service in sign language on the only occasion it was televised, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Bishop Barrymore’s priestly ministry eventually brought him to the United States with exchanges in Kentucky, Florida, and Texas. It was during his ministry at Redeemer Episcopal Church in Eagle Pass, Texas that he met his future wife, Patricia, who served as organist and teacher for the church and school. He married Patricia (Garcia) Barrymore on November 18, 1996, at St. Edward’s Church where he served as rector until his death.
Bishop Barrymore was appointed Dean of Texas in 1998 and Archdeacon of the Diocese of the Americas in 2002 by the Metropolitan Archbishop for the Holy Catholic Church Western Rite, the Most Reverend Leslie Hamlet. In 2011, he was consecrated a Bishop for the Diocese of the Americas in The Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St. Michael Stoke-on-Trent in England.
Bishop Barrymore considered his calling by God to be an immense privilege that allowed him to encounter and serve thousands of people over his 58 years in the Sacred Priesthood.
Bishop Barrymore is preceded in death by his parents, and six siblings.
He is survived by his devoted wife Patricia Barrymore, stepchildren Patricia L. Ramirez, Hector Luis Barrera, and Ana Lucia Lopez, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth and sister Shireen.
Pallbearers will be Hector Luis Barrera, Matthew Barrera, Arturo Lopez, III, Rey Ramirez, Daniel A. Ramirez, and Martin A. Garcia.
A visitation will be held on August 13, 2026, from 6 PM – 8 PM, with Rosary at 7 PM, at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218.
A Requiem Mass will be held at 10 AM on August 14, 2026, at St. Edward the Confessor Holy Catholic Church Western Rite, 4851 Anacacho, San Antonio, TX 78217. Space is limited. Overflow seating will be available in the adjoining parish hall where the Mass will be livestreamed. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX 78266.
