Arthur J. Mecum, age 88, passed away on November 27, 2020 in San Antonio, TX. Art was born in Carami, Illinois on May 7, 1932 to Arthur and Bessie Mecum, both deceased. He was also predeceased in death by his wife, Loan T. Mecum (Schulze), his brothers, George, Frank, and Ralph; and his sisters, Nelly and Gladys; and his beloved Chow-Chow, Arthur Junior.
Art served in the United States Air Force for nearly 28 years having done tours in Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9). This is the highest enlisted rank that a service member can achieve and is an example of Art’s dedication to excellence and his country. His last duty station was at the Pentagon before retiring in 1978.
Once Art was done with his first retirement, he went on to become a postal carrier for the USPS.
One of Art’s favorite places to be was at the VFW Post 8541 on Austin Hwy. He and Loan would spend many date nights there dancing and laughing with friends. After Loan died, Art continued to receive comfort and solace; as these friends became his family. He also enjoyed frequenting the same handful of restaurants in town and would turn strangers into friends at each establishment. Our family would like to thank the Jim’s on Perrin Beitel, Cristan’s Tacos on Midcrown, and the Asian Buffet on Austin Hwy for providing a welcoming place for him to enjoy a meal and then a good cigar.
Art is survived by his brother, David Mecum, his sister Cora Yates (Rick), his step-children, Eddie Schulze (Kelly), Dottie West (Andrew); 7 grandchildren: Joe Hutson, Megan Whisenhunt, Natalie West, Austin & Taylor Schulze, Travis & Emery West; and 4 great-grandchildren: Emarosa, Brooke, Evie, & Lucia.
A military funeral honors will be held at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery on a date yet to be determined. Due to COVID, masks are required to attend. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to VFW Post 8541; 2222 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, TX 78218.
