Arturo Cortez, Born, December 13, 1931, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2022 at the age of 90 years old. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Louise Cortez, oldest son, Arturo Cortez, Jr., mother, Basilia Cortez Geronimo, and father, Maydaleno Murillo. He is survived by his 6 children, Roberto, Rogelio, Albert, Anne (husband Joe Vasquez), Sylvia (Husband Rudy Martinez) Cynthia (husband Ricardo Almeida), 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, whom he loved and cherished, and extended siblings and relatives from both his Mother’s side and Father’s side. He was born in Saspamco, lived and raised our family in San Antonio and retired to Bandera, Texas. Our Dad was in the Army from 1950 to 1952 and was a Decorated Korean War Veteran. He was wounded on September 7, 1951, and returned to the 35th Infantry Regiment after spending 3 months in an Osaka, Japan Hospital. He finally returned home in June of 1952. Our Dad received his Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Combat Medical Badge, United National Service Medal and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, in November of 1999, thanks to Commander Dick Allwein of the American Legion Post 157 in Bandera, Tx and U.S. Representative Lamar Smith. Dad retired in 1987 from Civil Service at Kelly A.F.B. where he worked as an Engineering Technician for over 35 years. Dad was a long time parishioner at St. John Berchman’s volunteering his time as a Coach, grounds keeper and CYO President. He was a Member of the Lake Medina Shores Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a proud member of the Fort Sam National Cemetery Memorial Service Detachment for several years. His favorite hobby was deer hunting every year with his primos and longtime friends. Dad loved his family and friends. Dad, YOU’RE THE BEST. Rest in Peace, together with Mom and Brother. As we always say or text, LUC (Love you Chingos!) See you later, C.F.D.D. (Con Favor De Dios).
