Audrey was born October 5th, 1927, to Al and Rose Friedman née Kleinman in Huntington Long Island, New York. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1945. Most of her free time during high school was spent volunteering at the local USO canteen and attending dances for service men who were shipping out for England during WWII. After working as a sales clerk in her aunt’s clothing store in Flushing Queens NY she moved to Manhattan where she worked in sales for Revelon and was checked out as a key punch operator for Skinner Satin. Many boy friends and marriage proposals later while visiting her beloved sister Shirley in San Antonio she met, fell in love with and married Samuel Goldsmith. Making her home in San Antonio she worked as a key punch operator for the US Army at Ft Sam. Sharing their love they adopted Hal and Robert. Sam’s job took the family to Orlando in 1961. She immediately began her life as the consummate volunteer. First learning braille to write books for the blind, all the while running an ice cream and sandwich shop for twenty years where she created and made the best sub sandwich that ever existed. Afterwards, she and Sam traveled the country for years in an RV discovering all of North America.
After RVing they set up a new home in a retirement community in Titusville Florida. Sam passed shortly after and she began her second life with a very close knit group of family and friends. She traveled the world with her friends and her sister. Exploring such places as Bermuda, Panama, England, Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Russia. All the while finding time to volunteer for hospice in Titusville and the Elf Louise Christmas Project in San Antonio when she was visiting her family for the holidays.A constant smile on her face, a great laugh that could bring instant joy to those who heard it, and open arms made her a much love friend and mother. Always there for support. The best example of how to live life.
Audrey is survived by sons Hal of San Antonio, Robert and wife Merelyn of Port Orange Florida, grandsons Randy of San Antonio and James and wife Catherine of Richland Center Wisconsin, great-granddaughter Lily of San Antonio as well as Carol and Michelle Goldsmith.
A celebration of life will be held on January 10th, 10:30am at the Forum at Lincoln Heights 311 W Nottingham Dr in the Bridge to Rediscovery unit. All are welcome.
