Baldemar Vela Jr., 82, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Baldemar Sr. and Maria Vela; his brother, Raul Vela; and his sister, Wanda (Vela) Castillo.
He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Vela and Jennifer Christian; his son-in-law, Chad Christian; and his beloved grandchildren, Logan Valdes, Hayden Christian, and Abby Christian. He is also survived by his siblings: Oscar (Delia) Vela, Bertha Medina, Ricardo Vela, Ruben (Nellie) Vela, Javier (Laura) Vela, Veronica Davila, and Leticia Wagener, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Born in Laredo, Texas, he later relocated to San Antonio, where he lived a full life defined by service, generosity, and a love for music and dancing. Known for his dad jokes and great sense of humor, he had a natural gift for making people laugh and feel welcome wherever he went.
Baldemar proudly served his country and community throughout his life. He began his service in the U.S. Army, continued in the Naval Reserve, and went on to dedicate 31 years to law enforcement as a Bexar County Deputy Sheriff. He retired with honor, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, leadership, and deep respect from all who served alongside him.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home on Austin Highway. A funeral service will follow on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the same location.
Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:15 p.m.
