Barbara Jean Dr. Strain

She was a native of Attalla, Alabama and graduated from Etowah High School. Barbara received a B.A. from Birmingham Southern College, an M.A. from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin.

Barbara taught Speech courses at San Antonio College since 1969, including Fundamentals of Speech, Business and Professional Speech, Voice and Diction, and Pronunciation for non-native speakers. At the request of the English as a Second Language Department ESOL, she designed the communication curriculum for two courses. In addition, she used special computer software called Video Voice to assist students to master spoken English. Performances included: San Pedro Playhouse: The House of Bernarda Alba Bernarda, The Miracle Worker Annie Sullivan; Birmingham Community Theatre: The Women Mary, Cradle Song Prioress; The Church Theatre: The Vagina Monologues; San Antonio College: The Lion in Winter Eleanor, Hold Me, Sally Forth, An Evening with Mark Twain, Art and Poetry, The Good Body, and Disney's Beauty and the Beast Narrator. Endeavors: Barbara co-authored and published a Speech communication textbook, Communication Skills by Barbara Strain and Patricia Wysong. Barbara was professor and clinic supervisor at Lady of the Lake College, San Antonio, for several years. She was an on-air broadcaster at OWL Radio. OWL broadcasts programming designed for blind and partially-sighted individuals. She was a licensed Speech Pathologist. She also worked for the Department of Television for Edgewood public schools in San Antonio.

Awards: Barbara was included in the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development, with recognition for excellence in teaching. She was the Minnie Piper Stevens Nominee as outstanding educator for the San Antonio area. She was a panelist and participant in the Oxford Roundtable at Oxford University in 2006 and 2007.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Emory and Hazel Strain Attalla, Alabama, and Bob Strain Birmingham, Alabama.

She is survived by her dear friend, Dr. Evangeline Cantu, San Antonio; brother, Dr. Bryant Strain Ruth, Birmingham, Alabama; nieces and nephews: Karl Strain Jennifer, Gadsden, Alabama; Allison Strain Gerard, Berea, Kentucky; Keith Strain and Deona Strain, Murphreesboro, Tennessee.

The family will receive friends after the service.
