After spending most of her life in San Antonio, Barbara joined her parents, older brother Alfred Hilgers, and son Stephen Tezel in Heaven.
A proud graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Barbara earned her degree in education and stayed a passionate advocate for learning throughout her life. She served as a teacher and director at Our Savior's Lutheran Church Kindergarten and later as the director of Grace Niños at Grace Lutheran Church. Her love of education and children left an impression on countless families.
Barbara was a devoted fan of the Texas Longhorns and the San Antonio Spurs—cheering them on with spirit and loyalty through all their ups and downs.
She was married to the love of her life, Paul Tezel, for 63 wonderful years. Together, they raised three sons: Mark, Stephen, and John.
Affectionately known as "Baba," she is survived by her husband Paul; her sons Mark (Alicia) and John (San Juana); her seven grandchildren—Jacob, Kaitlin, Samuel, Noah, Aiden, Aleena, and Alanya; and four great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy. She is also survived by her younger brother James “Jim” Hilgers (Carolyn), and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
Barbara’s devotion to her family was the cornerstone of her life. Her home was always open, warm, and filled with love, food, and laughter. She loved working in the yard and was an avid cook, and her homemade birthday cakes were a cherished tradition. Whether tending to her flowers or preparing a meal, Barbara found happiness in caring for others.
A lifelong and active member of Grace Lutheran Church, Barbara’s faith was steady and deep. She built lasting friendships and served her church and community with grace and compassion.
Barbara will be remembered for her kindness, her unwavering presence, and the way she made everyone feel at home. She leaves behind a legacy of joy, faith, and family that will continue to live on in those who knew and loved her.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 14th at 1:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church, Helotes Cemetery (9925 Leslie, San Antonio, TX 78254). A celebration of life memorial service will follow at 2:30 PM at Grace Lutheran Church (504 Ave E, San Antonio, TX 78215).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Grace Lutheran Church in Barbara’s memory.
