January 29, 1934 - March 18, 2014
Barb was raised in Odom, Texas during her formative years. She was very close to her mother and father, who the grandkids called Mom and Pop. Growing up she loved to stop by her father's general store and visit with everyone. Her family was known for helping others out in hard times. Barb met the love of her life, Robert A. Turcotte, in college and they married in 1954. She still remembered the first day she saw him when he walked into class wearing his rolled up jeans, boots and red shirt. Barb was a great believer in education and attended college at Texas A&I University. She left college for about fourteen years to follow her husband Bob to New Jersey and back to Texas to raise their kids. After their kids started elementary school, Barb returned to college and received her Master in Education degree.
Barb was known as a very outgoing person and never met a person she didn't know. People gravitated toward her. Growing up in Odom she was popular with all the kids and was a drum major and played basketball for the Lady Owls. She loved being involved in extemporaneous speaking and won many awards during her years at Odom. This was in keeping with her later life where she continued her love of keeping in touch with all of her friends and family. She loved to read and late in life delved into computers. She played her online puzzles, games and researched and maintained genealogy records of the family.
She was a devoted wife of fifty-one years and a great mother, having raised four rambunctious boys. She lived for her family and was always a champion for her kids, grandkids and great grandchildren. She expected them to accomplish great things even when they were not sure they could. She was also a loving and generous grandmother and great grandmother. There was nothing that she loved more than visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Barb enjoyed teaching them about both sides of their family heritage.
Barb lived for many years on the family ranch in Hebbronville, Texas. She experienced great joy seeing her children hunting and learning about ranching. One year she decided she wanted to hunt a deer herself. After finding a buck she pointed the rifle, pulled the trigger and bagged a buck with one shot. This was her first and only endeavor at deer hunting. She just needed to show the boys that anything was possible and that she could hunt as well as they could.
Later in life Barb and Bob moved to Corpus Christi and then San Antonio Texas where she lived until her passing. After her children graduated from college, Barb reconnected with some of her special friends from early in life as if they had never been apart.
Barbara was predeceased in death by her husband Robert A. Turcotte, her son Gary C. Turcotte, her parents Glenn Boyd and Ruth Jenkins Scull, her sister Elizabeth Ann Scull (who she called Sister and her kids called Aunt Sister) and her grandson Jacob Turcotte.
Barb will be sorely missed by her surviving family: Her sons and daughter-in-law Michael Turcotte (San Antonio, TX), Jeff and Julie Turcotte (Bartlesville, OK) and John Glenn Turcotte (San Antonio, TX); Grandchildren: Sarita Carmichael, Joshua Turcotte, Maria Hoog, Seth Turcotte, Kady Turcotte, Chase Turcotte, and Megan Turcotte. Great grandchildren: Jacob Carmichael, Catherine Carmichael, Gavin Carmichael, Elizabeth Carmichael, Evelyn Carmichael, Tanner Turcotte, Emma Turcotte, Max Turcotte, Giana Turcotte, Hadley Turcotte and Bailey Turcotte. Sisters-in-law: Beth Turcotte, Joyce Turcotte, Barbara Sue Turcotte, Jean Claire Turcotte, Betty Turcotte and numerous nephews and nieces.
